When trying to run the game, I have encountered two problems:

1) Game does not start at all, "Application stopped working", but the overseer.exe keeps hanging in task manager
Solution - Create an exception in Data Execution Prevention for overseer.exe, if DEP is on (it is by default) Control Panel -> System -> Advanced System Properties -> Performance - Data Execution Prevention, include the game exe file in the exception list below.

2) Each time you enter a location, an error message "Error: An error mesage does not indicate an error" pops up
Solution - go to Audio configuration of the game and choose Midi Mapper instead of Wave Table Synthesis. The error should stop appearing.

Perhaps sticky this or include in a knowledge base, I spent an hour or two looking this info up.

Thanks a lot! Now I can finally play the game. But I get no sound at all in the video sequence at the beginning. Any solution for that?
That one did not happen to me. Do you have sounds in other FMV scenes? Try different MPEG2 codecs in the Video setup of the game. Try the "Default MPEG2 codec", or something like that.
I've tried the first option, as the game never let me start it up, but it still doesn't work. =(

I'll try reinstalling it to see if it gets anything fixed.

If you also happen to know how to fix the "graphic" issue, that would be great. Basically I am under Win 8 with Nvidia and it gives me terrible graphics. A lot of them don't even appear. For example, when I am in my office, I don't even see my drawers! And when I click to open them, it's actually transparent! So there is no way I can play... Gog told me Win 8 was not supported and they could not fix the issue. That's a shame.

Your only chance is to find older drivers for your Nvidia card, or if you have integrated graphics try running with that instead (from experience the Intel GFX seem to be much more compatible with older games)

Yes I have been trying to run the game with integrated graphics but unfortunately it didn't work. Now that I am playing Tesla Effects, I can't install older driver. Anyway thank you :)

Sorry :(
Overseer was always difficult to get running (even when it came out in 1998)
Ahah yes I remember! I even had to call Access Software at the time or Microsoft (not sure) to help me pass the giant bug at the beginning of the game that made it crash instantly.

For an unknown reason though, I never finished the game. I think the puzzle game were WAY too complicated for a 12 years old girl like me at the time :)

Oh jeez... and now I am nearly 28...

That is strange, after solving the DEP and MIDI problems, the game runs absolutely flawlessly for me, well, perhaps with two minor flaws:

- The subtitles are sometimes out of sync during FMV scenes
- The perpetual notion machine in Tex's office is missing its upper wooden beam, so the balls hang in thin air.

Other than that, no problems whatsoever.
