I just downloaded the newly updated DVD version of Overseer, and I'm getting an MPEG2 error when it loads, claiming it can't find it. The first time I started it, it told me ffdshow (which I have not installed on this computer, so I assume it's part of the GOG download) was trying to use the application. I told it to always allow.

I'm on Windows 8.1 64-bit, if that makes a difference. Anyone else getting this error? The decoder listed in the settings is correct - Xing.

Thanks!

I told it to not use it , selecting to use it crashed the game. I have not tried win 8.1 64 bit as yet

Hmmm. Now it's not asking anymore so I can't tell it not to. I'll have to see how I can get it to ask again. Anyone know?

just installed on my new surface pro win 8.1

no decoder found when selected no ffshow this time , selected use this time & decoder found & plays okay.
once you select always the ffdshow doesn't show again even though I didn't select don't show again.

I uninstalled it & reinstalled still no menu, edited the gog folder from the registry still didn't come up.
not sure how to solve your problem but I will continue working on it for you.

Thanks! I asked GOG and all they could tell me is it doesn't work on Windows 8. You're my proof it does! :)
It was broken for me when I had k-lite codec pack installed. Removing it fixed it you might need to remove codec packs to make it work.
Windows 8.1 pretty clean install.

I shouldn't have any strange codecs installed... I actually just got a new machine on Tuesday and haven't installed much. I'll take a look though.

I'll see if a separate install of ffdshow helps too.

well if its a new machine & you haven't installed much how about doing a refresh so it will get rid of the traces of gog.

just installed it also on my toshiba 8.1 notebook no problems there either. select using ffdshow one only, checked the decoder & then started with always use. Now your pc may have made a restore point before installed overseer so check that also

Refresh didn't work unfortunately. Not sure I want to go through a restore just for the game. I've already reinstalled a bunch of stuff after the refresh.

the restore I referred to is a system restore point not a computer restore .
I know, but won't that require me to reinstall applications and drivers? As much as I like overseer, I'd rather find an alternative solution, especially in case I or someone else runs into this problem again.

I did at first as I posted above, only because I selected not use ffdshow, once I got menu again . I know you don't have this option now. maybe i will ask gufino2 who was working on this patch to see if this was the patch gog used.

he may be able to help you. on my toshiba notebook 8.1 I had bad graphic corruption , walls were missing , had to revert back to a previous driver. all fixed now..

The game actually runs using very old interfaces (IDirectDraw2 and IDirect3d2) that were part of DirectX5. Probably there's something in the 8.0->8.1 process that breaks compatibility with those old interfaces, rendering some textures distorted or partially transparent. Probably many of Overseer's problems could be solved forcing the game to run using at least Dx7. Such hack is possible but it is somehow complex, don't expect it too soon :)
