Okay, I just can't follow instructions. I thought I patched it to 1.04, but I just installed the patcher. I re-installed the patcher ot another directory, and then actually ran Updater.exe to update to 1.04. I forced it to CPU 0x1 again, but still no joy.

I turned "video lock" from -1 to 1, and that helped. I switched the MIDI device, so now I have music. I switched the MPEG decoder to the Mediatrix one (or whatever it's called) and I was in. I loaded my game from Tex's office and tried to play parcheese. It crashed. Then it wouldn't start again. I kept trying, but it kept crashing before the Access Logo. (is this because I don't have an mpeg16.dll on my computer?)

I tried to find where the MPEG decoder was specified in the .ini files, but the best I could find was: MCIDISPLAY=0x8001 (or something). I changed this back to MCIDISPLAY=0x801 and it's working a lot better. The only problem now is that it minimizes the game after every video. When I click on the game on the task bar, it might come up and be fine, or it might crash.

Any idea what the rest of these do?
MCIMPEG2=MpegVideo
MCIDEFAULT=6
MCIAREA=0 0 640 427
CaptionDelay=0
ZMultiThread=1
MCIConfig=0x0

EDIT: Forgot to say, this is on Win7 32-Bit. Dell Latitude.

I don't think anyone adjusted these settings, maybe you could send longcat a PM now the site allows it
I keep reading that I no longer need DVD Express... say I do need it, where could I get it? I searched and came up empty.

I'm running on a fresh install of Win7 and there's a chance I don't have all of the codecs that might be required. I can play the converted MPEG1 VOB just fine in VLC, and they will play in the game... until they're over and then I get either kicked back to the desktop with a minimized Overseer, or Overseer flat out crashes.

well the mpeg1 doesn't use dvd express but you still need to install it. decoder only kicks in when the mpeg2 file is accessed.
Alright, I found and installed DVDExpress. Now I have an mpeg16.dll on my sistem which I didn't before... But still nothing seems to work.

If I use the default tex.ini, but change the MCIMPEG2 line to "mpegvideo" instead of "dvdvideo" then it loads the access logo, miniimizes to desktop. I maximize it and play the game until the next video, which plays fine... and then it minimizes to desktop. After a couple of minimizes, it crashes instead of minimizes.

If I try to use DVDExpress as my decoder, it instantly crashes overseer.exe.

Does anyone know what the cause of the minimizing is? If I could solve that, I think it would be playable.

by the way when you installed the 104 patch after you zipped them did paste them to the overseer folder.

No,
I unzipped the patch into a temp folder and then ran the updater.exe and pointed it at c:\overseer.

Was that not right?

just check the overseer folder & check readme.txt to see it shows version 104.
I had a problem some time ago with overseer & realised although I updated exe file the other files were not copied over.
Guys,

I found a way, but it is a departure from making it work in game.

I copied all of the .VOB's off the Tex DVD to a network share. I then installed the CD-ROM version of the game and as I was presented with movies, I played them via my PS3 on my TV and home theater system. This sounds like a cop-out, but it actually works very well and the movies never looked better on my HDTV with surround sound. You can pick up a document of which movies to play when you progress through the game here
I want to ask because I haven't found an answer in the thread: Does this workaround also work for the 64-bit version of Win7?
Hello : )
thank you for your topic helping.

I play with this in dvd game and French: p

install the GOG version
install DVD express http://www.metzomagic.com/Help/download/DVDExpress.zip
instal patch http://www.metzomagic.com/Help/download/Tmos104.exe
install RSX3D which is in the DVD
reboot your PC
Mount the DVD with daemon tool
click overseer.exe
If dont have a cursor mouse put -1 at lockvideo in the tex.ini
you you do not need to install patch French :) but the exe of french version is most stable, I put in mediafire if you want : ) http://www.mediafire.com/?g74uq1p14ob55co

Enjoy : )

Work for me in the Win 7 64 bit :) thank you!

I hope GoG will upgrade to the DVD version of the game.

I voted for the version on the request page none the less.

I got the dvd version working by simply playing as software mode & not hardware mode. You have just use your arrow keys for movement & not the built in movement device installed with the game.

rjspring: So from this do I assume that the Overseer version offered on GOG is the CD-ROM version and no the DVD version?
avatar
Red_Avatar: Yes and it's not surprising. I bought Overseer shortly after release because I already had a DVD drive and the game came with both DVD and CD version (the DVD version having MPEG2 video which is of a lot better quality). Even back then it was a massive headache to get it working because the software included didn't do the job. The game was designed back when the DVD players contained the MPEG2 decoder instead of the software. I recall you even had to pick a DVD brand from a list to get it to work and it still didn't because my DVD player wasn't on there and needed software.

With some luck I managed to get it going but it was pretty buggy with glitches left and right and it was very crash prone. Too bad since the quality was a lot better.
I actually owned one of the DVD drives that Overseer (like you, I bought the game shortly after release) supported in its configuration files--a Creative Labs drive with an MPEG2 hardware decoder on an ISA/PCI? card (I think! Back then Creative made lots of different stuff--or at least packaged and marketed a lot of stuff beyond sound cards.) It's been so long ago that I don't remember whether I had trouble with the game--if I had I would probably remember it.

I was disappointed with the drive and decoder, though--as the industry as a whole took years after that--lots of years--before DVD replaced the CD as the normal drive in most systems. For years the drive sat there largely unused by me--waiting on all the DVD titles I just knew were coming any day! I uninstalled the thing when it got long in the tooth....now, if only I could remember what I *did* with the darn thing!...;)

The version of Overseer I bought contained both the CD and DVD versions, and the MPEG2 was a *lot* better. I don't understand why the existing MPEG2 footage could not be integrated into the CD version of the game--it should be.
