Hey there,

Just installed overseer yesterday and got a couple problems. I have windows 8.1. (64 bits) and I play on a very recent laptop. (Bought at the end of 2013)

First, I launched the game and the fffdshow window poped up. I decided to not use fffdshow. Then the game launches with no video and then an error window from the game says something silly such as "error: no error were found". I decided to restart the game and used fffdshow this time. Video works fine but still the error window. Then I start to play and graphics in Tex's office are terrible. I can't even see my filling cabinets since they are transparent! It seems that the black colour has a real problem. I try to change the configuration and every time I get the "overseer.exe encountered a problem" the game then crashes.

That's a shame really. I have the real DVD game at home and I remember that it was all buggy. Not even playable. I had to desactivate something to be able to play.

Thanks

the error isn't really a error message is the midi, select audio from the config panel & select midi mapper. as for the graphics I had the same problem & it was my driver. On board graphics is fine.
I switched to on board graphics but that didn't change anything. Any other idea?

this does look similar problem I had in the past but I had no walls, the change in driver did fix it but that was on win 7 64. I have one pc on win 8.1 that I cannot solve as yet which just has flickering graphics. However 8.1 on microsoft surface pro 2 works fine.

Regarding flickering graphics, I had the problem until I changed some properties within the config in the game. The game actually doesn't crashes if I do some tweaking from the home screen. If I am playing though and try to change anything within the config menu, the game crashes instantly.

Jeez... I was hoping to play overseer and actually bought it because GOG stated it was 8 compatible... Might have to install Pandora instead. Shame, really.

it does play beautifully , I played right through without any crashes but on some 8.1 installations it has problems. the one win 8 pc that works was a new pc with no other software installed . I know overseer does not like dual graphic cards & I normally run it on 1 cpu.
I have a 710M. The laptop is very new but up-to-date meaning all my drivers are up-to-date. And I agree it obviously has problems on Win 8.1.

One member on another forum advised me to downgrade to a previous version of my graphic's card driver. Problem is, since the laptop is very recent, I have done at least 3 different updates regarding the graphics' card driver. And I do not really want to downgrade...

no if you changed to on board graphics & still have the same problem don't bother with changing your graphic driver.

did you setup overseer in the nvidia control panel under manage 3d settings. see attached image

Yes I exactly did that but it didn't change anything unfortunately.

The way that I generally use a forum is to dive in and see if there's something other people have discovered that will help me out if it so happens I'm running into a rough time with a game--had you done that instead of simply writing a list of complaints and little else you'd be far ahead of the game (pun intended...;)). This forum is crammed full of people running all kinds of hardware configs under Win8.x x64 who are having a great, nearly bug-free experience with the game--I'm certainly one of them. Indeed with the present Gog version coupled with the information gleaned by several forum members and even myself--the game is better looking, far less buggy, and much more enjoyable than it ever was at its release (hardware at the time had a difficult time with the demands of the game--demands that, today, are strictly lightweight.)

With the things I discovered when I made this post, the game became enormously more entertaining--the vastly improved midi under Win8.1 changed the entire character of the gameplay for me. Then there have been posts galore about running the proper version of FFDshow because the older one that is included with the game is outdated and doesn't support the DVD version of the game very well if at all, as related in this post.. There's nothing so new about your hardware that would give you major problems, trust me--my hardware is pretty new, too.

Forums are pretty much wastes of time if your only goal is to complain, imo. They are far better at helping folks like you (or me) who are having problems solve them. I think if you'll make an effort (not simply skimming posts but actually *reading* them for valuable nuggets of information) you'll be rewarded in spades with a far better Overseer experience. At least, that's certainly been the case for me! Give it a shot...;)

Huh Oh, not sure I understood your post completely :) Were you complaining about me specifically or about the people on the forums complaining? Sorry if you found that I was complaining. I was not. Really. I have been a member of many forums and helping communities as well.

And yes, I read all the posts regarding overseer problems. Even yours. Unfortunaly, it didn't fix mine. That's why I wrote the post.

Seems worth trying at this point.

Don't worry, you're not the only one. Now there was another thread where that post would have been valid. Just not this one.

Have you contacted Support yet? Perhaps, it's a known issue with ideally a known workaround.

Puda,

I personally didn't find anything wrong with your post, & I am sorry your problem has not been solved. I think gog support will tell you that win 8 is not supported but people have installed on win 8. I truly believe the problem to be your graphic driver but as you have changed to onboard graphics & the same problem makes me think it could be something else installed on your system. I will refer your post the the guy that patched this version of overseer to see if he has any ideas. I also saw your post on tex.murphy forum but I usually answer the support questions over there so maybe its best to look for answers here.

Puda,

I had another look at my notebook & its uses GeForce 332.21 Driver which is also the driver for your machine. overseer works under this driver under win 8 . I also tried my onboard graphics driver HD 4000 with intel driver 10.18.10.3345 & this gives me the same problem you are suffering .

Thanks guys for your support :)

You are right, I should contact GOG. I have read they were not really helpful for hardware problems but I will try anyway.

Plumgas, let me know if you heard back from the guy that patched the game.

I will let you know if I hear back from GOG.

No, I wasn't specifically talking about *you* per se, but your post happened to be the most handy upon which to cast my vent...:D Sorry! I read posts which often make it plain that complaining is the order of the day with solutions being only a minor, secondary consideration, believe it or not. I even endeavored in good conscience once to try and help a person with a particular problem over several posts only to discover that the whole post had been nothing but a sham from the start designed to try and sell me a Mac (fat chance of that!)....;) (I'm smiling now, but at the time I was fairly steamed.) Thankfully, the great majority of people are like you and *sincere*! (Again, sometimes I also may be having a bad case of indigestion, too, because generally I'm not a scathing person, at least, that I'm aware of...;))

Good luck with those Intel HD integrated drivers...they have a distinguished, and in my opinion, well-deserved, reputation for notorious D3d/OpenGL "bugginess" over the years. Win 8.1x64 or any combination of AMD Catalyst drivers have presented me with no problems with the DVD-version Gog now distributes, and I believe that when troubleshooting it's usually just as important to know what hardware/software isn't causing people problems as well as what is. So, good luck and I certainly hope you get it all ironed out!
