dtgreene: Should a new player really be playing on Expert Mode? My impression is that that mode was intended for people who were already familiar with the game amd wanted a new challenge.

I certainly don't intend to start on Expert Mode when I do get around to playing this game.
No but it was to emphasize how useful my tips was for the player.

Technically speaking, I would say Expert isn't just for experienced Terraria players but experienced platformer, action-adventures as well. Granted, it depends on what you want out of the game. While I enjoy the challenge of the game, the sense of exploration is most important and how you can combine that with role playing as a a builder.

Nirth: I though it was better to post in this thread than start another as this is exactly what I had in mind.

Always keep a chest on you so that if you find out you have a little too much gold you throw out the chest then the money (and perhaps some items you want in that place) and you won't have go back to your house and you won't lose your gold. Particularly useful in Expert mode due to increased gold loss (75%)
Chests aren't that good for this, a Piggy Bank or Safe would be the things to use. If you get lucky enough to find a Money Trough ( http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Money_Trough ) this would be the best option, as you don't have to find a suitable surface nor will you have to remember to pick it back up.

I had forgotten about that, thanks.
