tinyE: 2nd or 3rd time I got to him I finally killed him, and surprisingly easily. Of course, the 2nd or 3rd time wasn't on accident so I was ready for that bastard! :D

HunchBluntley: Then immediately after defeating it, you abandoned the wold because Hardmode? =P

Uhhhh yeah! DUH!
WHEN WAS SOMEONE GOING TO TELL ME YOU COULD STRAP TNT TO BUNNIES!?!?!

Seriously people, this should be day 1 information!

To be fair, you can't actually do that, you can only strap dynamite to bunnies.

I'm a little sad that you can only fire the kamikaze bunnies out of a cannon, you can't set them loose as suicide bombers. I feel there was a lot of wasted potential there. It would have been a great moment reminiscent of Full Throttle.

HunchBluntley: In retrospect, I probably should've just committed lava suicide or tried to use the magic mirror (same effect ;) )
Mirror suicide has the advantage of killing you at your spawn point immediately after it zips you back home, so your stuff is easy to grab - you basically hoover it up automatically as soon as you spawn. So if you gotta pick a method of suicide after accidentally triggering the Wall of Flesh, that's the one to choose.

My main character (the only character I use in my main world -- which, in turn, is the only world I use that character in) is Softcore. I did create a secondary Hardcore character for use in a different world, but she died pointlessly in my second play session with her. Since I had no character left to explore that brand-new world with, I created a new Mediumcore character...who, for the longest time, I hated playing with due to his constantly dying and losing his gear. (I made some posts about my travails with him earlier in this thread.) I finally got to the point where I had (and have!) a crazy amount of backup gear stashed in at least 3 places in that world so I'll have at least something to work with if I die far from home, but...yeah. I kind of play the game for the exploration/discovery aspect, not to prove myself by defeating all the bosses as early as possible with only a wooden boomerang or whatever. With this game, "Softcore" pretty accurately describes my level of dedication & desired challenge. =)

HunchBluntley: snip
As far as I'm concerned, Softcore is the only way to play this game.
Sounds a lot like how I play it. Two crates in my 'spawn hut', with grab-and-go stuff for three deaths. I tend to reforge those spare accessories until I get defense bonuses on them since my backup armor is progressively weaker.

One thing I learned to do is to keep a piggy bank near my general storage crates so I can access after spawning whatever stuff I previously dumped into the money trough. That empties out the trough, which will need space to carry the gear recovered from multiple deaths.
Aww, Halloweentime is over. : (

Christmas isn't too far away. As is I got a Xenomorph costume that I am keeping.

Lately I've been switching between my two characters/worlds, and I got one of those costumes for each of them. The last new costume I found (i.e., not a duplicate) was a pwetty pink pwincess outfit, so one of my characters (can't remember which!) is now strutting around in that. =D
Used the Pirate Map to trigger the Pirate Invasion for the first time. After losing 5 NPCs, it's pretty clear that I need to make some housing farther away from the starting spawn point.

Tempted to start a new world and character: fresh beginning now that I have some idea of what I'm doing. Maybe do just enough exploration to get a feel for where the different biomes are found, get some stone and other basic materials for a decent house, and go from there.

Didn't you run into that with the goblins? And, yeah, you need to get them a couple screens away before you get a solar eclipse. Those guys trash NPCs in a hurry.

Yes, but the goblins don't have a ship with four cannon. XD
Started a large world. I'm trying not to dig too much before Hardmode, unlike the first world. Moved the housing and storage / workshop away from the starting spawn point, on the other side of a wide and shallow lake. The new buildings are better laid out, and I'm going to stay on top of keeping the loot organized. Left plenty of room to grow both areas, with the storage area underground and the housing directly above it. Access between them is handled with a wide Gray Brick shaft that will eventually become a Hellevator. For now, it's just a Purgatorevator. ; ) May as well expand it upwards, too, to become the path to the skylake and clouds.

Made a little hanging shack with a bed and a chest, closer to the housing and above one end of that wide lake. That way, if I croak during an invasion I'll be a bit removed from the invasion point at the starting spawn point, but still close to the NPCs (read: Nurse) for support.

The start spawn point will eventually get an arena of sorts, along with some lava traps and the like. I'd like to play around with activating traps, trapdoors, statues, etc., which I didn't bother with before - though I did collect a lot of that stuff from underground on the last world.

Except for building, progress feels slower. My weapon and armor crafting is taking longer and I'm not finding many good loot drops so far; the best drop to this point was a Money Trough. Missed out on a couple must-have purchases from the traveling merchants since I was low on cash when they came through, but they'll be back around with the good stuff eventually.

I'm trying to get over to both edges of the world, to access the oceans and get a general map of the surface and its biomes. Tough to get through the Crimson with poor armor and weapons, and access to Jungle is blocked in both directions by Crimson. Anyway, the ocean gets you access to the Fisherman and his quests, and the all-important Reaver Shark (and less-important Sawtooth Shark), which really opened things up for me in the first world.

So, the current goal is to acquire better combat kit and accessories, and then make my way to the edges of the world.
Made it to both oceans last night, and woke up the Angler. Took forever to get through the Crimson to the west - it covers about 1/4 to 1/3 of the west half of the Surface. Just past the Crimson I noticed a single-block wide vertical shaft - sure sign of a sword shrine. Dug my way down and picked up an Enchanted Sword. Exploration is now a whole lot easier and safer, and its projectile acts as a flare to explore beyond your torchlight.

Sword in hand, it was an easy trek to the west coast to find Adam the Angler. Hung around to get those tools I wanted - Reaver and Sawtooth Sharks, and the Swordfish - but missed out on the Reaver Shark. Picked it up later when I headed East, and then hung out to battle a few sharks. Going east turned up a big Jungle area along the way - the west jungle is intermingled with the Crimson, so it's a bit of a mess. West holds the dungeon, and also a Living Tree - which did not appear on my first world.

Still don't have any good armor but I did pick up a Radar. Not as important as the Depth Meter and Compass at this point, but at least things are headed in the right direction.
