Jross007: I have recently bought and installed ToEE on my new HP 5 laptop and after following all of the suggested fixes cannt get the game to even boot up. I have the HP 15 with 6 gig of ram and an i5 processor. and unfortunately running Windows 10. anyone out there with a possible (or definite ) fix? I am also having trouble with Pirates.
Hi, and it's 2016, woot! OK, so I tried vehemently to get the game to work. I followed every single piece of advice here and nothing worked. At first, I didn't think it was the videos since the logos were playing. So what I decided to do was rename the ToEE\data\movies to ToEE\data\movies2... The problem never came back. So then I realized that the problem must be the movies.
I renamed the folder back to "movies", and I thought I'd google for the codec, which is bink. This is released by RADtools, so I decided to install the latest codec to see if it works. Somehow it worked and I decided to run the game. To my surprise it worked. So to test it again, I quit, and ran the game again. It failed. It crashed again.
Then I tried something multiple times. Skipping logo movies vs. not skipping. Why did I try that? Because I was so excited to report victory about RADtools codec download that I forgot to skip the logos to write this very message. So what I found is... every time I skip the logo movies, the game crashes. Every time I don't, the game does not crash.
Give letting the movies play a try and see if that works for you. It worked for me. Why this works for me, I do not know, I can only hope it works for you. (you can skip the actual intro movie, you don't have to watch it all, as soon as it starts playing, you can skip and the game will load properly)
Lesson: LET THE MOVIES PLAY!
