D3DOverrider is a 3rd party tool (a wrapper) that stands between the game and your video card's driver. It intercepts calls and adds the ability to do things like triple buffering in direct3d (the option in your video card menu is for opengl only).

If you don't know what this is then you probably don't have it running. It comes as part of RivaTuner (normally obtained from guru3d.com).

It's compatible with most everything, but not it turns out with TOEE.

I tried all sorts of suggestions to get this game to work but all failed in one way or another.
I have windows7 64bit.

However finally I succeeded.
What I did:
Installed the GOG version.
Installed the Circle of Eight 6.1.0NC mod.
Make sure that both the toee.exe and the TFE-Xexe properties have administration privileges ON and the compatibility setting is OFF. Thats right, do not tick the compatibility option.

Now the game works fine. Using the ToEE Front-End X shortcut installed by the Circle of Eight mod I can change the resolution to my 1680x1050 and run either the original version or the modded version of the game, even with the intro working!

Hope this helps.

Hi, I had a similar problem where my game always crashed at startup and, after trying dozens of different things, I realized, that for whatever reason, the game suddenly decided it didn't like my characters.

I removed all the character files in the 'players' folder and my game runs now. I don't know why this happened. I have the Circle of 8 Mod and I don't remember making any changes. The game was working perfectly and I mush have run it like five times before it started crashing. Still, I'll try again with a new party (am dreading having to start all over again) but I'll let you know if it starts crashing again.
Set your resolution to 1280x720. That is the only way I am able to boot the game.
I had the same issue with ToEE and Vampire: R, and after spending a few hours trying out different things I tried setting to my resolution to 800x640. I have found 1280x720 to be the most stable resolution.

System Specs:
OS: Windows 7 64-bit
GC: ATI Radeon 5800
I can post more of my system specs upon request.

Hope that helps.
My ToEE always crashed on "initializing sector data" after playing the videos showing the logos.

In my case I'm running PC Tools Firewall Plus, and this is how I fixed it.

Go to the firewall's Settings/Filtering tab, set "Enhanced Security Permissions" to Low, reboot the PC.

After rebooting I am able to run it perfectly and with CO8 mod installed.

Also, I can confirm that:
- You need to close D3DOverriderWrapper if you are using it.
- I am using the game's original "temple.dll", no need to replace it.
- No problems running at 1280x720 resolution, but it may crash to desktop at 800x600.
- My copy of ToEE is part of the Dungeons & Dragons Anthology: The Master Collection (download version)

Hope this helps somebody, cheers.

Thanks so much!!! Worked immediately :)

Actually...It only worked once I unshortcutted it from Steam, changed my screen rez to 1280X720 and went directly to icon on desktop and right click/ran as admin.

The DLL fix didn't resolve my issue.

But I did resolve it in my case by re-enabling intro movies in the Co8 Front End.
It's the damn intro movies... Don't disable it.

Sinatar: Are you running D3DOverrider, I had the same issue and shutting that off corrected it.
Fantastic advice, many thanks for sharing. I use this program all the time, so sometimes forget it's there; creating an exception fixed this, cheers!

It's been years since I've heard of anyone using that program...;) The utility is handy but dated. I like using Radeon Pro, which provides so much more than just D3d triple buffering. (But, this won't help much (at all) if you're running a nVidia card, of course.)

Worked for me, too! Thanks!
For me the issue happens right after the videos. I don't even get passed them. I only started getting this issue after installing the co8 mod version 8.1.0 to try and get party members to level 20 instead of 10. After I installed it, the .exe file has not worked since. Does anyone have any info on this. I don't think all the other posts would be related to mine.

Edit: As it appears, nothing will work now...I tried taking off co8 and reinstalling the original form here and I still get the toee.exe has stopped working. It used to work before and now it won't work at all.

I followed all the direction for the co8 mod from their official website and made sure I was doing everything to a T. Nothing wants to work correctly for this game now.

Could you try with Temple+? At the very least it produces a logfile so if it still happens it can be diagnosed and probably fixed.
I was experiencing something similar on my laptop. Turns out if you have mirrored displays setup, the game crashes immediately on launch (the fumy part was it was a phantom display that was being mirrored when my laptop was undocked)
I have recently bought and installed ToEE on my new HP 5 laptop and after following all of the suggested fixes cannt get the game to even boot up. I have the HP 15 with 6 gig of ram and an i5 processor. and unfortunately running Windows 10. anyone out there with a possible (or definite ) fix? I am also having trouble with Pirates.
