Thought I'd crank this old game up and play with the latest Co8, which I've done in the past on this same PC back with version 7.x of Co8.

I have no issues installing the game, and the .exes look fine, but when I try to launch in various ways it just fails. No errors. I do desktop support for a living, and have tried most of the basics to include (Win7, 64-bit):

running as administrator (although I'm already a local admin)
tried various Win7 compat settings, even though these aren't generally necessary with GOG games
tried running in a lower resolution
disabled my antivirus and elevated the permissions on the install folder, then uninstalled/reinstalled
tried downloading the setup again to avoid corrupt files

Really weird, and first for me with GOG, and I own about 15 of their older titles.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and in case there was confusion, this isn't a Co8 problem, as I'm strictly trying to make vanilla GOG version run at this point.

If you have installed the Co8 mod, you need to run the game from the Co8 front end shortcut, so you can activate the default game (or whichever you want to play).

Thanks for the reply. Front end works fine, but no difference in launching. I must really be desperate, as I dug up the old CDs to see if the original would work. It doesn't either. Really odd.

I've tried the original now as well with the Java front end. Both the GOG and CD versions install fine, but don't run. Adding the Co8, which also installs and runs fine, doesn't make a difference. The Co8 log even shows that it's passing off to the exe with no errors, but it just does nothing. Pretty frustrating. Should have mentioned above, that I've tried all these steps with my AV turned off. Also, have tried going through the registry to look for anything odd related to TOEE.

Anyone else seen this game just break like this?
Can't really help, since the vanilla game from GoG installed and ran fine when I did it on my Win7 machine. All I can suggest is maybe actually try installing the Co8 mod as well, since that replaces the toee.exe file with a new "debugged" one, then doing as Hickory suggests and actually running the game as administrator from the TFE-X utility and playing the game in "vanilla" mode from there.

EDIT: OK you ninja-ed my post, so forget everything I said above. Just remember that the Co8 mod replaces files with new ones, so you literally need to de-install everything and re-install from scratch if you made even a slight mistake during the Co8 install process.

Also, I remember on the Co8 troubleshooting thread, they talk about older versions of NVidia drivers being necessary to run the game.

Thanks for the time and suggestions. It's an AMD box and video cards. I've tried some variations of resolutions, etc..., but nothing. Also tried every combo I can think of between activating the Co8 and vanilla, running from the .exe's or the Co8 launcher. Sad...
Do you have Java installed? You need 6.0 or higher I believe to run Co8 mod as well. Shouldn't be a problem from the GoG version, but once you run the Co8 installer you need it.

What happens exactly when you run the TFE-X utility as administrator (ie. right-click on the desktop shortcut and choose "run as administrator" from the list)?

Woo-hoo. Thanks again guys. So, I recently purchased a 24" monitor and have been running duals since. The game absolutely does not like the combo of my video card/drivers and the 24. It does like my older 22 inch monitor. Bizarre. Anyway, I'm playing again. : )
Congrats! Have fun playing!
