Hi all.

I'm planning to play this game for the first time. I'm trying to decide whether to play it "out-of-the-box" or to install those unofficial patches and Co8 stuff.

What would you recommend?

I'd recommend installing the Co8 mod. It doesn't change the game so much that you're essentially playing a different game or anything, but it adds a lot of fun content, fixes a lot of bugs that remain in the GoG version, and gives you more game options such as changing the maximum size of your party.
Yes, I agree with kebsis. I bought ToEE when it first came out and have been impressed by the Co8 mod. It's basically the same game as before, but with extra content (that blends in very well) and fixes for a lot of irritating bugs.
I am playing straight out of the box and having no bug problems. I thought about getting circle of 8 also but decided to try it like this first after hearing it had been patched by GOG with an old fan made patch by some guy name Mobieus.

edit, well nvm about the bug thing, as soon as I said something it started. nothing game breaking, just some funky icon changes sometimes and sudden game choppyness.

If you have Win 7 or Vista, I would say that if you are used to play, and get by with buggy games - sure - it is a blast. Not really no. I think that this game is as buggy as ever and even after reading through a very helpful forum, I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy ToEE in its present form.
