I'm going to play the game game for the first time, just the gog version without mods. According to what I've read crafting will yield incredibly powerful stuff if done properly so I'm worried about game balance.

I'm worried the challenge will be gone, that this will lead me to grinding XP and wasting time for creating everything and that the joy of finding magical items, which is an essential part of progression, will be gone.

So how should I handle this ? Will restricting myself from all crafting yield the better gaming experience ?

The first time i played ToEE I also played vanilla, and I didn't know about crafting. Nor did I manage to find any uber magic items other than the one you need to enable the final boss battle. It was tough in some places, but definitely doable and certainly epic. You will need to depend a lot more on spell buffs, careful gameplay and clever tactics rather than magic items. You may find yourself with a huge money surplus at some point midgame. But maybe not, it is easy to unknowingly take wrong decisions that close off parts of the story. You can always craft a few mediocre items if u want without breaking the game balance or eating too much exp.

Thanks for your information. Good to know it's not a must. I've created my party now but I'm still undecided if I should craft. I guess the decision can wait until my evoker reaches level 3.

Can wait a fair bit longer than that.
I'd say go for it, the game balance is... all over the place anyway.

And if you installed the Co8 new content, and follow the story to new town,
the difficulty is such you're expected to use every advantage and exploit to scrape through.
