So followed the above and no errors, but after I installed 8.0.1, I still don't see it in the ToEE Front-End X application?

I just see:
Circle of Eight Modpack 8.0.0 New Content
Temple of Elemental Evil

Does it not show the new version or did something go wrong?

pi4t: I'm having trouble with my install of the New Content pack (v 8.0.0, though the v8.0.1 doesn't fix it). Having installed the game from the GOG setup (and not into program files, obviously) I've run the installer, and everything seemed fine. However, when I try to activate the modpack in TFE-X, I get this message:

ToEE Front-End X encountered a serious error:
IO Exception when determining the size of package: invalid CEN header (bad signature)

The program is unable to continue and will now close.
(followed by some information about reporting the bug to the Co8 forum, which I can't yet do as I'm waiting for my account to be checked by a moderator. It also asks for my TFE-X.log, which is here.)

Does anyone know what I've done wrong/what's wrong?

EDIT: I managed to ask on the Co8 forums, and it turns out I needed to install Java 7, as Java 6 couldn't handle the size of file it was using.
I have java 7 and I still get this error any advice?

EDIT: I needed to uninstall java 6 first. I always had java 6 and 7 cos I need 6 for some software but apparently when the mod has 6 and 7 to choose from it chooses 6

You can also right click on the exe, and tell it to run with Java 7 manually. Personally, I changed in in the shortcut from the start menu that the ToEE installer creates: I changed the "target" line in the shortcut tab to be "C:\Games\Temple of Elemental Evil\TFE-X.jar" (with quotes), and chose the Java 7 "Java(TM) Platform SE binary" rather than the Java 6 one in "opens with" (in the general tab).

Jarmo: It's a hit and miss. For most the game works just fine with or without Co8.
(as long as it's not in programs folder and still probably needs to run as admin)

And then for some it doesn't work, but the next time it's installed it does work,
without apparent changes.
This is true. ToEE may be the most mysterious game ever. To my knowledge no one has ever been able to nail down why it works fine for most people, but others have no end of problems.

Hey, thanks to everyone who have posted in this thread. The info really helped!!

For me, at first my anti-virus software was interfering with the installation of the Co8 modpack. So had had to uninstall everything (even the original game files) and reinstall everything from scratch with anti-virus turned off.

Then, once I had had installed Co8 v8.0.0 and Front End X was running properly and activated the new content mod, when I tried to play the game, I was getting an error message saying FE-X didn't have permission to access the ToEE.exe file. This even though the game was installed to C:/GoG Games/Temple of Elemental Evil.

I'm using Windows 7, so I changed permissions on the "Temple of Elemental Evil" folder (right-click / properties / Security tab / Edit ) to "Full Control". Then I right-clicked the Co8 desktop icon and ran as Administrator and it worked fine.

Also remember once you are in the FE-X and it is running properly and it runs for the first time, you also need to "activate" the new content modpack shown in the list as well by clicking on it. Otherwise you will be playing vanilla.
So i just got the following error:

Any ideas? The game without the modpack launches fine btw.
After a long time wanting this, I'm finally closing in on starting to play it

A few questions...

I'm a Win 7 64 bit user - for some reason I THOUGHT I remembered reading somewhere NOT to download the latest version of Circle of 8 - maybe it was the second to last update? Does that sound right or am I making this up? Simple version of the question - which Co8 do I want to download?

Also I think I know this answer - but optional content - a bit yes, yes? In all ways an improvement over Vanilla ToEE?

Finally, I want to roll my characters - literally roll them (I'm assuming there's a button to roll for stats) - I heard the game is hard - am I going to screw myself if I do this?

Thanks!
1. Download the latest version. It works fine with Win7.
2. 90% of the new content applies AFTER you have finished the vanilla adventure, in what is effectively an expansion that takes place in the Granduchy of Verbobonc. Most of the NC that affects the vanilla game is either user-friendly (ie. reduces need to run through the boring bits) or purely for theme (you get to visit a brothel in Nulb if you want - entirely irrelevant to the adventure). I believe though that NC added the "alerted Temple" status, making the game harder if you screw up your covert investigations. Overall, the NC still feels very much like the vanilla adventure, just better, so I don't really see a reason not to play with that one.
3. Rolling your own stats is fine. A couple of 15-17's with the rest higher than 10 works fine. My first playthrough I actually used a party of the pre-rolled characters that come with game. Most of them have serious flaws that no self-respecting player would tolerate. What you can learn from this is: You are going to die sooner or later regardless of how good or bad your rolls are ;)

Dreamteam67: ... Solid Advice ...
Thank you very much! Appreciated greatly! I think I'm most glad that I'll be able to roll without "fudging" too much ;) And ya, good to know that while I will be terribly slaughtered on more than one occasion it would be because I "borked" my characters at creation!

I'm not sure of when I'll dive in but I was thinking of rolling characters sooner rather than later - I know I'm going Dwarf Cleric, Human (2-Weapon) Ranger.

A straight Fighter (not sure about race - I lean human but I don't want to load up on humans - I like to mix it up so maybe a half elf)

And then maybe something from this list, or maybe a multi/dual class, or maybe something off the wall:
Everyone's must have gnome thief / illusionist, a paladin, a wizard, a bard... I really want to roll a bard but I can't remember from "way back when" how could a substitute they are for a pure spellcaster. Anyway, lots of fun stuff to decide!

Huh and looking over the rulebook as I type this it seems like dual classes aren't in 3.5. Oh well!
I would start a new thread and ask some advice. I think this one was pretty much intended for installation tips and troubleshooting for the Co8 modpack.

Thanks will do for sure if I can't decide the direction I want to take - this was more thinking aloud ;)

I DO have one last tech / game / mod question - should I NOT install the program / mod in the X86 Program Files Directory? Again, I thought I read this a few pages back but I'm not sure - will I be okay to install to default directory Program Files (X86) / TOEE...

Never, ever install games (any games) into Windows' protected 'Program Files' folder structure. Games regularly write data and save files in their installation folders, and Windows will not allow this if the game is installed there. Windows creates virtual folders for such data, and this confuses a lot of games, sometimes to the point where they won't run. Always install games to somewhere like C:\Games\<name of your game>\ .

Wow I was totally off base about this! I could have sworn someone told me once that it was BEST to install in X86 (as it would then only allow "authorized" things to run there - if that makes sense). I have a lot of games there - will start installing elsewhere and considering removing what I already have...
