post your logs and crashdumps. it's probably something very minor, like not having the proper dlls installed.

Qwertyman: I've actually been trying to use the 2.4 patch with my original disk version but the game always crashes as soon as you get to the first cutscene (after choosing a branch of service). I'm kind of hesitant to buy the gog version as a solution to the problem I'm having because it may have the same problem.
The GOG version did not crash for me at that point, but like voodoo47 said, it could be something specific about your system.
I also can't save any games for some reason. It acts like it saves it, but when I go to load game it doesn't show any save files. It doesn't seem to be saving my config either because every time I load the game back up after the crash everything is back to default values. Anyways, as far as the logs go, do I just post the WER log or is there another one somewhere I should post? I'm not too familiar with posting logs, I usually just check the event viewer if something important crashes. Anyways, here's the WER log (I'll just copy/paste since it's kind of short):

(edited out since it was no longer relevant)

That's easy, don't install the game in the Program Files directory, Windows will prevent you from writing files there, like save games and configs. Install someplace that Windows doesn't care about, like C:\Games and you should have no writing issues.
Just by glossing over the log, I'd advise you to install the game to a different path.
The Program Files folders are specially protected folders in Windows 7 which screws up many old games.
Wow, I completely forgot about that. I guess I've gotten so used to the way new games just create subfolders in My Documents that I didn't even consider what I was doing when I installed it there. I'll give that a shot (it will most certainly fix the problem). Thanks for the help, I appreciate it!

I'm still considering buying the gog version even if I don't really need it, just to feel like I'm supporting their efforts of going after the harder games to get licenses for. I'm a college student though, so I try not to throw money around needlessly since I have so little of it at the moment.
