hi, Im having problems with the SS2Tool and DirectX. Its a fresh Windows 7 install (only installed it yesterday). SSTool says I need to get the End User Runtimes (June 2010) and brings me to an MS download page.

I download that file and run it, and it asks me to select a destination for the files to be installed. No idea if they need to go somewhere in particular so I just select C:\. I run the set up application, computer restarts, I try SSTool again but its still saying the end user runtime is missing?

Let it install the runtimes to whatever directory the installer lists as default.
Just stopping by to say thank you to the guy who started this sticky, really helped installing mods and for Thanator for compiling all of them in one package! Started playing this gem and loving it! :D

Did you run DXsetup after extracting? Try extracting to a folder instead of C:\
is anyone getting the "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to the computer" UAC prompt in Windows 8 64bit ?
I have only 2 other games installed on my vaio: Duke Nukem 3D which is also in the GOG Games folder in C: and Prey which is in Programs Files x86 and they don't give me the same problem; I tried different things including an elevated program shortcut and of course I still get the prompt (also running the program as administrator does nothing).
Should I try re-installing it? I don't want to close the UAC settings altogether for such a minor issue but if someone knows a fix it'd be great...

Savant99: (and let me say it was a pita to encode these because of the archaic codec the game uses.)

Boilpoint: Did you get the process down and can do it again for all videos, or would that be painful to get those too? (Sorry, a little OCD :P )
Not easy. The encoder won't work on anything higher than Windows XP, so I'd have to do it all on an old box. People need to remember this codec is seventeen years old, I had a heck of a time getting it to work. Playback is easy thankfully.

I'll look into it and see if I have what I need on my old box. I've reformatted since my last encodes, but I have the raw materials to do it. I'll take a look.

Meanwhile I found my other encoded files for the 3 cutscenes, and these are a slightly better quality than what you can find on the net. (I made a second set since bandwidth was more precious back then) Does anyone have a suggestion for a place to host the files? (190 MEG)

you need to open the location where you have extracted, and run dxsetup.exe, that will update the required dlls.

Is it the prompt you get when trying to run the game? I get that even though I installed SS2 in the games folder. IIRC one can change the permission for individual folders to allow exes in said folders to be run without triggering a UAC prompt, but I forget exactly how to do it at the moment.

Go to the installation folder (by default this is C:\GOG Games\System Shock 2) and open the properties of Shock2.exe; go to the compatibility tab, remove the administrator check box, and click OK, then adjust your shortcuts as needed (GOG's shortcuts point to start.exe, which still gives the prompt).

Once you have made these changes the game will launch directly without that prompt.
