I just booted up the game this morning and was really confused by the movement controls. Should I just remap them to the standard WASD configuration, or will I need to keep the lean left/right/forward business accessible? I'm really looking forward to playing this weekend, but I'd like to be able to walk in different directions without finger calisthenics.

I cleared all the movement keys and set:

W - Run Forward
A - Slide Left
D - Slide Right
S - Backwards
Q - Lean left
E - lean right

I've left everything else the same. It's probably not optimal but it feels okay to me.

Hopefully someone can come by and post a better layout.

Did pretty much the same. Was surprised a game from 1999 had lean in it ;)
I think I also added 'lean down' to 'alt' key as I wonder if that might be useful at some point, can't remember been like 8 years since I played this.

The only thing I did notice is none of the weapons appear to be assigned (normally number keys). Might do that at some point, but for now I plan on using the inventory or mouse wheel to switch between them.

I think the lean might be useful to scope out rooms that may or may not contain a camera or turret. God knows, those turrets ate me up back in the day :D

System Shock 1 (1994) had lean. If I remember correctly it was the first game to feature it.
I have always been using:

S = Run Forward
A = Slide Left
D = Slide Right
W = Walk Forward

and for this game: X = Back up

Never did use the Leaning options.

I did this ever since I played this game with the old 3DFX Voodoo cards.

I only did this because I find it was easier to use the S+A or S+D combinations.
Easier to run forward an continually dodge right and left at the same time. I actually
use this on all games I play when possible. I don't back up enough to worry about that key.

I'm using the same control layout I used with Thief:
W: Forward
A/D: Slide left and right
S: Back
Q/E: Lean left and right
Shift: Hold to walk
X: Crouch

Leaning left and right is really useful (and something more games need to have), don't know about leaning forward.

Hm, that seems like a cool layout. Might try it thattaway.

Alt + W - Lean forward for hard to grab loot/switches (showing my Thief heritage here).
Alt + S - Quick Save.
Alt + L - Quick Load.

Which caused me some head-scratching in the training section when the game told me I could press 2 to equip the pistol.
These threads weird me out because surely everyone has a standard control layout they use in every single PC game, right? I know I do.
If the number keys aren't mapped to the weapons by default, something is wrong.

And forward lean is pretty much useless. I never use it. Left/right lean, on the other hand, are VERY useful for picking off cameras and turrets.
For the longest time, I've used ESDF rather than WASD, and games like this are part of why I got in the ESDF habit early on :)

E-move forward
D-move backwards
S-strafe left
F-strafe right
A-lean left
G-lean right
W-lean forward
R-reload

They started off unbound for me for some reason. Probably an oversight in NewDark.
It's weird that most keys are unbound, like weapon selection. I typically prefer default bindings as the manual says.
No default weapon binds here either, running straight from install with no mods/patches.
Not that it's hard to set them up, atleast I discovered this in the "press 2 to equip pistol" training section rather then while trying to fight for my life in the game proper :)
