I see a lot of talk about it, this , that, but what is the word on this release? I would love to support it...

I'm sure GOG will update it if there are compatibility issues? But yeah., what is the general thought about this release?

As far as I'm concerned, this is The way to play the game. While I would wait for a bit before patching fleshes out some bugs which are on some configurations, SS: Enhanced Edition comes with a possibility of rebinding controls, supporting custom resolutions, and runs smoother than ever without using DosBox. It also fixes some bugs still present in the original and comes with the mouselook mod preinstalled, with some keys which never appeared before (like next and previous weapon key.) The only thing it lacks is text2speech mod or whatever it's called which makes transcriptions of audio logs match with their text-based representation, but that one can be easily installed.

Oh.. good idea, silly me. I'll check that out also, it seems all the negative reviews are buried a bit.

Yeah, me too - that's the problem, the text of various logs and emails doesn't always match the voiceover in vanilla game. Nah, they're kept, it's just all (or at least most) places where the characters said something different than what was actually written in the text is fixed - the text is rewritten in such a way that it perfectly matches the audio.

so the original mails are replaced by this mod ... rewritten = replaced

like i said i really hope this wont come to vanilla ... i want to read the original mails

Oh yeah, obviously, I would never want this to be forced on players - keep the game as close to the original as possible, even with some flaws. It would be a nice setting in the options tho.

That mod isn't what it sounds like. Originally, the game was hurried out the door as a floppy disk version with no voice-overs for the logs you find scattered around the levels or the "e-mails" and other transmissions you receive -- only text. When they recorded the voice-overs for the CD-ROM version that released some months later, the new speech didn't adhere at all to the text from the original text logs. Because of this, while the basic information conveyed in each message is the same in both text and audio versions, the actual presentation and details can be quite a bit different. This apparently bothers some people -- messes with their feeling of immersion or whatever. THAT's what the mod Fenixp mentioned is for -- it replaces the original text of these messages with text that's based directly on the audiolog voice-overs.

I personally never minded the disconnect -- I kind of looked at it as a way to get more in-game information. And anyway, when I played this back in high school, I started making a timeline of all the e-reader messages, and discovered that a number of them had clearly incorrect date stamps (fairly mundane, pre-'shit-hitting-the-fan' log entries dated after when those people were already dead or "converted"); that kinda killed a lot of my immersion right there. =)

If you still have that timeline information that shows the errors with the in-game log timestamps then that could be used to make a new version with those details corrected. Probably considered only very minor, though, but it would be nice if your information could be used.

Nope, sorry. Those and some other stuff (notes for solving puzzles in Myst, the reference cards for Star Wars: T.I.E. Fighter and Command & Conquer: Red Alert, and possibly my hand-madeMight and Magic II maps) seem to have gotten thrown away by one of my parents back in the day in a fit of careless weeding-out of papers. :(

On the bright side, it's not like it would really be that hard to collect this info again -- just a little tedious. I might volunteer to do it myself, but I haven't played the game in years (though I still have the CD-ROM version somewhere), and I don't plan on buying the game on GOG any time soon.

(Off topic: I find it both funny and sad that Firefox's built-in spell-checker highlights 'CD-ROM' as a possible misspelling.)
