Personally, I would like it if it was Obsidian who handled System Shock 3. They know their stuff when it comes to RPGs, and working on New Vegas, Alpha Protocol, and their unreleased Aliens game probably gave them the experience needed to make a solid FPS.

As for the scenario, I would like it if the protagonist from SS2 continued his/her adventures in SS3, and ends up being acquired by Tri-Optimum or the earth military. The explanation of the character's background and actions could serve as a way of choosing stats and equipment, as well being a narrative device. Similar to how SS2 handled things.
Hm, Obsidian....Alpha Protocol was very interesting but I've never finished it. And I have finished New Vegas but I didn't find it very interesting. It's a weird developer.

Maybe I'd prefer Visceral to do it, then again EA would undoubtedly f***k it up with heavy streamlining and microtransactions so...maybe not.

Shodan as a protagonist would be awesome.
One of Obsidian's big points is there focus on story, atmosphere, and world building. There has always been a focus on that within Looking Glass Studio's games, which is why I think Obsidian would be a good successor to that legacy. Obsidian's big problems tend to stem from cruddy engines and the inability to secure a sweet deal with publishers.

On the idea of Shodan as a protragonist, I can think of a couple ways to go with that. One may be that since SHODAN took over a physical body of a person, Rebecca, there could be significant issues with her personality and Rebecca's merging. That could mean that SHODAN could potentially copy her original personality into a mainframe in a attempt to preserve herself - leaving the modified Rebecca to her own devices when she recovers from SHODAN's takeover. That means she could become an protagonist, sidekick, or exposition fairy.

Or heck, even play Rebecca with SHODAN literally inside your head, trying to take control. Could even have sequences similar to Cyberspace in SS1, but inside your own mind, pushing SHODAN back.
Perhaps the player could spend their cyber modules to choose how well they can resist SHODAN, or opt to increase Rebecca's survival abilities against outside forces? As SHODAN gains more control, she could start locking doors and prevent some objectives from being completed - or change the outcome of those objectives by taking control of Rebecca for a moment.
With Shodan as a protagonist the devs could reintroduce the VR parts. I missed that in SS2 a lot.

Btw speaking of Rebecca - don't ge me started. I finished the game yesterday and it was an awesome experience except that stupid last few seconds of the outro. I feel like Levine dropped the ball here big way, what with the bad b-movie writing and evil laughter. My god. With all the careful suspense building and mature writing what a facepalm ending.

Imagine the last scene in the Alien, where the xenomorph would just jump ouf of the wall, started twirling his huge moustache and laughing diabolicaly: "Nooow, Ripleyyy, you are miiiiineeee, mwhahahahaha!" That's sort of what I felt at the end of SS2 :)

I disagree completely. I found the ending creepy as hell. The "Nah!" stuff was funny though.
I'd trust Arkane with System Shock 3.

Hm, Arx Fatalis was awesome, one of the best RPG I've ever played but I'm not a big fan of Dishonored, to be brutally honest, it felt uninspired and derivative.

Then again maybe it's just because I've seen and played too many games in my life :)

They were under incredible time pressure, I think the cutscenes were all bashed out before the story was even finished. Still... "Nah!" I thought that was anti-climatic and kind of trolling, but funny all the same.

One of the problems with developing an SS3, according to Ken Levine, is apparently down to an issue of intellectual property ownership, EA sold the license to someone and no one knows who holds it now.... or something. It's been a while since I read up on it.

Still, if GOG is selling SS2 then that seems to be a good sign. If there is an SS3, I want the developers of Amnesia to do it.
I believe I read in the one of the SS2 articles that the lawyer representing Star/Meadowbrook said that the rights' holders are considering allowing for a new System Shock to be created. It would probably be Night Dive doing that.
I never played Bioshock. How's it dumbed down in relation to System Shock 2?

Also isn't Deus Ex basically System Shock 3?

Did the devs ever talk about the Rebecca stuff? For some reason, I remember assuming that that was happening /before/ you offed SHODAN, and figured she went back to normal afterwards.

Bioshock is System Shock - most RPG elements and invetory management + convenient PSI powers that don't make the game night unplayable.

Nope. The games are substancially different, aside from the entire 'RPG in first person perspective' thing.

How does taking out the RPG elements make it dumbed down, though? I don't think they really worked very well in SS2, and I thought SS1 was a better game for their absence.
