So I'm interested in System Shock 2, but I can't decide if I want to get it on GOG or Steam. It would be simple if it were a price thing, but the game is so old that it requires a bit of a workaround in order for it to run on modern gaming PCs. And so I ask you, GOGers, which version of the game is the best in terms of the port? Does the GOG version have anything that the Steam version doesn't, or the other way around? I saw that it was recently patched with NewDark, so there's that, and is it possible to play co-op with multiple versions of the game? Thank you all in advance!

it's all the same, engine and compatibility wise (both are updated with NewDark to run on new pcs nicely). GOG version has the extra goodies, like soundtrack etc if I'm not mistaken. also, it's currently on sale, for an unbeatable price of $5, no matter what part of the world you live in.

the neat thing about GoG is that they polish up old games to run out of the box on modern PCs. In this case though the real heroes are Night Dive Studios for getting the rights and an anonymous group of modders who created the NewDark patch that fixed more bugs than I could mention.

Well of course, that's why I love GOG and have almost four dozen games from them :)! My concern is whether or not the Steam version is modernized in the same way as GOG's version since GOG's was recently patched.

Hm, alrighty then. If they are or aren't the same, I really don't mind since they both support mods anyway.

The patching was done by Night Dive Studios, so the versions should bepretty much the same. In any case, it's good to run SS2Tool over your install anyway, just to make sure you have the absolutely latest version of NewDark.

both the steam and GOG versions are currently at 2.42, and are, as I've said before, equally fast and compatible.
