Extremely doubtful, considering that SHLINK has no use for any of the DLLs from Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable packages.

Guys, I have found a new one! Uhm, yay...? I guess?
As posted here already, my Elevator on Lvl6 [the one to Lvl3] got corrupted somehow, as it seems.
The Button Panel just completely disappeared, I got in and was all like... uhm... *spins around three Times*
... where'd my Buttons go...?

Confused, the Hacker exited the Elevator, and got in again, pretending it didn't happen, but the Buttons were still gone.
Restarting his Systems didn't help, and the last Backup was too new to be of Help, as well.

The Elevator on the other End, the Lvl3 Elevator that goes to Lvl6, still has the Button Panel. I didn't want to go through Lvl5 again, like I had to to get down to Lvl3, so I tried using that one to get back up to Lvl6 - and the Game crashed.

What I did:
01) I regularly used Lvl6's Elevator to Lvl3, because I was storing all my Stuff on Lvl3.
02) Then I pushed all the Buttons in the Groves - except the one in Beta Grove.
03) Attempted to enable Master Jettison Switch, the friendly Lever told me I couldn't.
04) Had a Look at the Lvl7 Elevator next to it, which I couldn't use, because Biohazard.
05) Went to Beta Grove, did the Thing with the Thing to disengage that Thing.
06) Back to the Master Switch, this Time it worked, of course.
07) Wanted to put all that Stuff from Beta Grove to Lvl3.
08) ... where'd my Buttons go...? *Spins in Elevator*

So yeah, and finally,
09) Took the long Route through Lvl5 instead to get to Lvl3
10) Attempted to use Lvl3 Elevator to get back up to Lvl6
11) Crash.

SHODAN really got me on this one...! That's way nastier than locking me in with, say, a Bomb that I planted!

Hmm. I didn't dig that deep. I only know that the VCRedist stuff has been source and cure of troubled quite a number of times in the past. So it became my prime suspect based on empirical evidence ;-)

I had reinstalled the game about 5-7 times, and after the steps I took it suddenly worked. Maybe it was the DirectX June 2010 re(pair)install or the graphics driver update after all. DirectX being more likely since I hadn some strange "popping" sounds right before the crash, which might point to some problem with DirectSound.

this is usual corporal l1 support placebo
placebo because it doesn't solve anything for anybody having issues with the sw itself..

toxicTom: For all the people experiencing the "crash after one second":

I had this, and it's now working, my machine is an AMD Phenom 2 X4 3.2 GHz, 16GB RAM, Geforce GTX

I wrote to GOG support and got an answer rather quickly (but with an excuse that it took so long) :-)

Support had the following suggestions:

"Run as administrator" - didn't do it - not necessary.

"Add to trusted list in AV/Firewall" - didn't do it (btw. I only use the Windows Firewall and MSSE).

"Reinstall the June 2010 DirectX runtime package, then use the DirectX web installer."

You can find the archive file containing the 2010 package installation files here:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

I reinstalled the 2010 DirectX (already had it), don't know if it had any effect. The DirectX web installer page is currently broken - displaying some Windows 10 download tool, so I skipped that one.

"Try disabling DSR"
http://www.gog.com/support/support_view/potential_issues_with_supersampling_dsr_factors_feature_on_highend_geforce_cards

It's always off on my machine.

"Please update your graphics device drivers"
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx

I did that, although my drivers were pretty recent. Don't know if it had any influence.

"Please reinstall Visual C++ 2013 SP1 Redistributable Packages"
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40784
after pressing Download select:
vcredist_x64.exe
vcredist_x86.exe

I did that, and I strongly suspect that this did the trick.

I can only say that now the game runs like a charm. And compared to SSP in higher resolutions the performance is just fabulous! Many thanks to the people working on the EE and GOG support. I hope this post may help other people with problems.
can you tell step by step how deleting files & putting the same files back there 5-7 times can make anything better?
if not, you could've as well sweared on your mother's death to achieve the same result..

i can't see any help in your posts, sorry
it's not helpful to say "i've boiled a water to make cup of tea and the game suddenly started working for me, you can try it" or "if your game doesn't run well, try turning off X, it solved the problem for me", it's stupidity, this game's forum is full of it

my help here is about telling ppl who're assessing the possibility of buing it to not to do so

that's always the case with bugs, they affect SOME ppl
the problem is YOU DON'T KNOW IF YOU'RE ONE OF THEM PRIOR BUYING (and there's no way to tell, if you read all the posts, there's no pattern, the only more prevalent common denominator seems to be raptr for whatever bs reason) .. hence spending the money to find it out is silly
and we're talking about complete showstopper here

svatem1: they created X
they started selling X
minutes later ppl found X is crap
days after X is still crap, they're still selling/announcning X, which is crap

yes, i wish them to go out of business

korell: Let's just get one thing straight, the crashing issue that affects SOME people in System Shock Enhanced Edition is NOT a Batman Arkham Knight type of disaster which affected almost everybody. That game got pulled down because it was a problem for most people. And that was a major AAA title.

And you do realise that if they went out of business it would never get fixed? You must really hate System Shock if you want that to happen, but then you bought the game so clearly you don't hate it. See how contradictory this is? How about wishing for something more constructive instead?

Damn. Who hurt you this much, man.

Alright, listen up.
Continuing to be a Comment Warrior on the Forums like this certainly won't speed Things up or help anyone, neither you, nor any others, since People come here only after buying the Game, like 95% of the Time. They only ever come here if there's something worth talking about in the Game after playing it or for solving Issues, like mine with the Disappearing of the Lvl6 -> Lvl3 Elevator Button Panel.

AT THIS POINT YOUR WARNING WOULD ALREADY BE TOO LATE AND WON'T PREVENT ANYONE FROM BUYING.

So, may I suggest that you instead write a Review of the Game on its Page, rate it for what you feel is appropriate, and explain why you think that holds true even though the Developers are trying to fix it. Put all of that in a Review that potential Buyers might even find before buying the Game.

If you're still unhappy about it even after doing so, please just report to GoG Support and request to have your Money refunded, which may take some Time, depending on how the Situation looks to them. If they say, let's give'm one more Month to fix it, and / or refund half the Money for now, that's all you want, right?

You certainly shouldn't:
A) Continue to insult other People who're trying to help on the Forums
B) Insult the Developers who're trying to solve the Problems, wanting them out of Business
C) Keep up collecting all the negative Rep (-11 now) until the Forum Mods come after you
D) Keep complaining and don't actually DO anything like, contact Support for Refund

What to do:
Step 1) Warn People BEFORE buying by writing a Review instead of Forum Comments.
Step 2) Wait for the Developers to fix the Stuff, being a Comment Warrior won't speed Things up.
Step 3) If it's still not satisfactory, GoG Support will probably refund you if you'd approach them.
Step 4) Profit. As long as you do this within 30 Days after Purchase of the Game. So, better hurry.

One thing I've noticed while looking at the source code of SHLINK is that it doesn't flush CPU caches after allocating memory for code. According to Microsoft,

"When creating a region that will be executable, the calling program bears responsibility for ensuring cache coherency via an appropriate call to FlushInstructionCache once the code has been set in place. Otherwise attempts to execute code out of the newly executable region may produce unpredictable results."

... many 101 support tricks ...
Unfotunately the last time GOG support always suggested the same simple tricks everybody probably already knows and which are seldom helpful. It seems to be a standard text which they copy and paste. Not the kind of support I'd wish from the GOG professionals. Hopefully Nightdive dives a bit deeper ;)

BlackSun: D) Keep complaining and don't actually DO anything like, contact Support for Refund
Well at least this is something he did a while ago (demanding refund). Unfortunately GOG has not contacted him back giving him his refund and so he stays bitter, angry and insulting.

BlackSun: What to do:
Step 1) Warn People BEFORE buying by writing a Review instead of Forum Comments.
Oh, he has already opened another thread with a warning to not buy the game and it's the thread title so it MAY be that people will read this BEFORE buying. Writing a review for a game which does not even start for the one writing the review would probably result in a very short review. Given how calm and locical he arguments here I would also think that it would mainly consist of ranting about how bad GOG is and the devs and how this is an alpha version (it may be beta but never alpha because it is feature complete - but that is another thing) not woth selling. Not very useful for anybody.

avatar
BlackSun: Step 2) Wait for the Developers to fix the Stuff, being a Comment Warrior won't speed Things up.
He does not have faith in the devs and he said this multiple times. That may be why it is so hard for him to wait. In his little world the bug has to be fixed at once and every game has to work for everybody from day one.

Edit: According to this he probably managed to fix his problem but he still is not sure if it is fixed.

A) no insults; telling the truth is not an insult (e.g. "you're not helping by making a list of clueless rituals of what you've done before the game started working for you")
B) again, telling the opinion of paying customer is not an insult, i told them to quit the business, that can be hardly marked as an insult..
C) so what..
D) i have already contacted..

1.) good advice, will do that
2.) no & yes, meanwhile
3.) have requested that, no response so far
4.) download/run - 2 minutes; condensating hashinfo from forums: 10 minutes; no need to wait that long to find out this is work of greedy non-competent lamers (harsh, but still my opinion, my guess is the only competent member of their team is the author of shlink)

B) again, telling the opinion of paying customer is not an insult, i told them to quit the business, that can be hardly marked as an insult..
In the example you listed there, the very way in which you've worded it, telling ToxicTom that he carried out a clueless ritual, IS insulting. He's just a customer here on the GOG forums trying to offer help and you say he's doing "clueless rituals", which is akin to calling him clueless for doing it.

Telling the dev to quit the business is you saying they are no good at game development, which is again insulting. Especially in this one instance of how you worded it: "i hope your business will die soon".

You told me to go and re-read the GOG terms and conditions, and when I posted what I'd found you claimed you'd read something different and posted it. Turns out the meaning was identical, as I illustrated. So making suggestions that I didn't know what I was talking about, that was also insulting.

You called MarkoH01 a fool. Another insult.

I've seen a number of digs you made at voodoo47, for example calling him "fanboyish", when he's actually been involved to some degree with SSP and SSE. He also has mods out for SS2 and Thief (see SS2Tool and New Dark).

You referred to the game as "not even alpha tested". It is feature complete, but there are some bugs. At the least that is a definition of beta. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_release_life_cycle#Alpha
Alpha ends when the product becomes feature complete, and beta begins. There are no more features planned to be released to System Shock Enhanced, so it is at the least in beta, with bugs to be fixed.

Grunzi offered a suggestion, trying to help, to which you responded "you're joking, right". I mean, how much do you want to put other people down for trying to do anything to help?

Making sarcastic comments like "since you look like somebody who's actually trying to solve this now" and "i did 30 push ups this morning, i ate 2 slices of bread with honey and it did not solve the problem. i hope this will help somebody".

Responses like "i'm sorry to hurt your feelings. grow some skin".

Now whether you originally meant to be insulting or not (it could be that English isn't your first language and something is lost in translation) I can't say, but it has been pointed out numerous times and you've not made any effort to change your attitude, so from that I deduce that you are continuing to be this way intentionally. The negative rep you are accruing just goes to show that others are of the same opinion, too.

So don't claim to not be making insults. Everything I posted above, there, is contained in about three threads.
also, lets not forget that he is actually up and running now (latest patched exe has worked), so I really have no idea what does he want at this point - any normal person's reaction would be "thank you for patching it up for me so swiftly" and not "my holy crusade of informing people that this product is broken thus saving their souls shall be carried out as long as I draw breath".

actually, lets ask him directly - svatiku, what do you want?
