Cmon, who would ever build a spaceship like this? It makes absolutely no sense. F..e. those squares on the wall, what...why? What's that? What's its purpose? What's the purpose of having walls skewed like in the first Tomb Raider games? It's just ridiculous....

Back in the day, when computers' power was not strong, it was the best approach when building levels but now it just looks bad and awful when replicated to the modern era with modern graphics.

Also what's wrong with all the lights? Is this some kind of disco? One room and every corner of it has a different color. The wall are blue, one corner is orange, the opposite one is red, the one next to red is green.....I am just speechless.....Just awfull...

It's a 1:1 remake. Some will hate it, some will love it.

I personally believe they should have carefully updated the level design. I do wish system shock to be popular and I have to agree with the OP that staying entirely true to the initial level design might severely limit the possible audience.

I don't really care, I love the original and this game the way it is.
There is too much to enjoy in this demo (the complete level 1 of the game) to care about "unrealistic look"... and I love that look too. And the level design is just special, you can feel the fear of being chased by shodan in the labirintic level design of system shock, full of secrets and details. I just cannot undestand how can you don't like this demo. I don't preorder games, but this time I got really close to just buy the game now even before realease, this demo is this good for me.

yes, most games' depiction of future (technology, vehicles, cities, ships, stations, whatever) is unrealistic.

It's a game; it's not supposed to be realistic. But of course the better graphics the harder it is to sustain the suspension of disbelief.
Anyway a "realistic" space station would probably be rather bland and boring to explore. Exploration wise the original SS certainly has very good level design.

Look beyond the style and play it. It plays much better than many other games, especially console-to-PC conversions.
You are free to choose the direction where to go to, you are not directed with hints - a thing I like.
Those walls in these rooms have specific functions depending on their color, there is a logic behind it.
As for the lights: In the first demo they released you could knock them all out, that is what I miss in the later demo version. Though I would have to check the current demo..

Ad for "unrealistic level design", currently we have nothing real in that size to compare against. It might be useful to make it modular so everything is square, easy to produce, easy to replace, easy to fix. The game came out right between Doom 1993 (which is 2.5 D) and Descent in 1995 (Quake 1 came 1996). Descent even could have more than three dimensions due to the way the engine works - quite funny to play such a level which is not possible in reality since rooms and corridors can overlap several times. So System Shock fits perfectly in place with the GFX capabilities. Though the original game has a bad user interface compared with current standards, and that is fixed with this new version.

If you don't like it just go away instead of complaining around. There are enough games out there which might fit what you like and I hate for whatever reasons, and I could talk about why for hours.

I played through it yesterday, and I loved it. The look and feel of everything. Including the user interface. The atmosphere is amazing in this game. Will definitely buy it if the demo is anything to go by.

I agree that the level geometry looks awkward with these new graphics. Between tweaking the level design a bit to make it look more appealing or keeping it 1:1 I think there's no wrong decision, it's just a matter of taste.
But imo if you wanted to play something like the original game you can just go play the original already. I think they could have deviated a bit more from the original.

The original Kickstarter goal was a faithful adaptation of the original game. They later strayed from that goal and tried to re-imagine a more modern game, but the Kickstarter backers got upset, so they returned to making a faithful remake. WHERE U AT when they tried to make a modern game? You were nowhere, that's why it didn't happen. NOW you complained. Good job and congrats. Where were you when they were actually doing it?? You people DESERVE not getting that modern remake. Everyone from now on who complains about not getting anything you want, whether in gaming or in life, ask yourself: WHERE U AT??

They would NOT have run out of money if their new vision had got support (and additional funding) from other publishers, but it didn't because the publishers said MARKET EXPECTATION wasn't there. And who comprise of the market? You people, of course. So again, WHERE U AT?? WASSUP??? If the market, that is you, had shown some support for the new vision, it might have happened.
