caitsith01: I'm talking about the port.
Sorry, misread it. Then I guess it's still too fast for your taste. :p

avatar
caitsith01: And Dosbox can run too fast, contrary to what you suggest.
Yes it can, but if it happens all you have to do is reducing the cycles. "Running too fast" is never gonna be a serious issue in DosBox as all it takes to solve it is pressing a few keys or changing the config files - that's what I suggested. :P

Yeah, I just tried it - still runs significantly too fast, at least the version linked in this thread. I am comparing this to the original game, which I know well (and which had issues with poorly written timing, but which did run correctly on most up to date machines when released).

DosBox is a problem in this game because something about the way DosBox emulates old machines means that the menus and certain other features run at a million miles per hour, while other parts of the game run much more slowly.

Also annoyingly the GOG version runs way too slowly on my netbook, while the port runs well (but too fast due to a bug in it, discussed in the community section of the port page).

Morty_P: Is there any way to change the window size with this? Runs great but I'm trying to stream it and the tiny window size is killing me.
avatar
Ravey: You can press F8 to switch to hi-res mode (640x480) in-game. You can run GOG's DOSBox version at any virtual resolution you want by changing the config.

Grombolar: sorted it out myself thanks your your instructions, everything's just dandy :D

1. Extract swars.zip into /SWARS folder
2. Move SWARS02, SWARS03 & SWARS04 from the /SWARS/sound folder to /SWARS/music & rename them to track_1, track_2 & track_3 (.ogg)
3. Move INTRO.MKV from /QDATA folder into /SWARS/intro folder
4. Play by clicking swars.exe

Thanks again, it's perfect! :D

Ravey: No problem, added your instructions to the zip!
Moved all the files but i have no sound at all including sound fx any ideas?

Try replacing openal32.dll with this one:
[removed]

I installed the port you posted here. It works great, thanks for posting that!

I'm wondering though... Can I still run the DosBox version with the same files? I'm finding it tough to decide which one I like... I like the in game speed of the port, but I like the menu speed of the DosBox version.

Just use the port and set the menu projector speed to fast (bottom left icon after you login is the options menu.)

You could always re-compile the port using the lower max FPS patch in this community thread:
https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/syndicate-wars-port/sVDHowuiXcs

I've never done such compiling myself, though, so I've no idea how easy/hard it is. Vexillium/Unavowed did put the compilation instructions on their website - http://swars.vexillium.org/#community - if that helps.

It may also be worth making them know about the sale of Syndicate Wars on GOG as they may find that their work can be used with the GOG version in mind rather than using the game CD.
The game is rather balanced, but from New York gets into tactical planning than shoot everything that moves.

Is this normal that Epidermis is automatically installed to Agent who picked it up, so no text description in menu and such contrary to what I see on Syndicate fan page screens.

As for port question, did they finally added multiplayer support (aside of some random sound/strategic screen glitches)?
People here playing the port as per the link, take note, the version linked too definitely runs too fast. You are not playing the game as designed and it will be very, very hard, if not impossible, towards the end.

Vexillium's port has no multiplayer. You can click on the button from the system menu in the game but you just get an error message pop up.
I bought this the very instant I knew it was available. Plan to review it too. Great game, I'm very happy to have it again after all these years.
yep me to i bought it downing now

caitsith01: Can someone familiar with the original game report on whether the SWars Port code has been fixed so that it runs at the correct speed on modern machines?
avatar
F4LL0UT: It's DosBoxed, so "running too fast" won't ever be a problem - if anything the game can get too slow if your machine is too weak to handle the emulation. The way the game was pre-configured by GOG it's a little slow, even (except for the menus which run too fast - and which is a good thing because those transitional effects drive me crazy).

If you want the game to constantly run with the intended speed you should try the source port that Ravey posted on the first page of this thread.
This is really annoying though. GOG configured Syndicate Wars in such a way that it is impossible to adjust the DOSBox cycles in the conf file - the game will run at max no matter what you set it to, which means the menus are at hyper speed and look ridiculous to me.

So basically our only two options are to run the DOSBox version and have messed up menus, or run the port and be unable to finish the game because it runs too fast?
avatar
Grombolar: Okay, I was a bit too hastywith my earlier comment, awful performance (sound & mouse cursor wise)
avatar
Ravey: Drag everything onto your Syndicate Wars install. Installed the port.

(the music files you need should be in the sound folder, so if there's no music in-game - move them over to the music folder and rename them track_1.ogg, track_2.ogg, track_3.ogg if necessary.)
avatar
Grombolar: Done. Which .exe to use, swars.exe gives me a ERROR: Allocation *W_SCREEN. Press Return to continue., so it doesn't even launch, DOSbox starts but is laggy & crappy. Tried many different things, err....

Could you write proper plain installation instructions? Would be appreciated...

*EDIT* Nevermind, sorted it out myself thanks your your instructions, everything's just dandy :D

1. Extract swars.zip into /SWARS folder
2. Move SWARS02, SWARS03 & SWARS04 from the /SWARS/sound folder to /SWARS/music & rename them to track_1, track_2 & track_3 (.ogg)
