Win7 64.
I'm able to install and play the game with no problems, but in the first interactive scene in the lobby of the hotel, there is no dialogue sound. I can hear ambient sounds and background noises, but no speech. I think there is supposed to be speech, as the character's mouth moves, and there is a delay while she is 'speaking'; also, in the options I can turn subtitles off, which mean I'd have no idea what was going on with no audible dialogue.

If you examine some of the things in the lobby there is definatly meant to be speech. Like if you click on your suitcase you should have dialog. Have you tried running the program with compatibility settings or as administrator by right clicking the shortcut and going to properties and then the compatibility tab?
Also I take it that the game cleared the integraty check when you installed it? Did you install the game to programfiles folder? If so you could try uninstalling and reinstalling with as administrator. When you reinstall it might be a good idea to make sure your antivirus is also not interfereing with the install.
If none of that helps could you please post some more system specs, especially what your soundcard is?
Thanks very much for the suggestions; I've tried what you've suggested but alas it's not worked thus far. I'm installing to the default directory, I've tried reinstalling with AVG's Resident Shield, Firewall etc set to inactive, I've tried various compatibility options and installing and running as an administrator.
I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium in 64 bit. Video card is an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS with latest drivers, though the video is working fine.
Sound is coming through the onboard Realtek - it's a new compy so I've not grabbed a sound card as yet. The Device Manager is calling it the Realtek High Definition Audio, latest drivers (6.0.1.5964). A sound card is on my list of things to get soon, so if you reckon that's the problem I could probably just play something else until I get it.
Thanks for the assistance in either case.
I'm not sure if a soundcard would fix the problem or not, I think the onboard realtek should work with this game. I'm not sure why its playing some sounds and not others though, but you can contact gog support about this game as its one of the few they offer windows 7 support for at the moment.
I'm not sure which game version GOG has. I know there are 3 patches and that I needed one of them to get the game to work properly for me.
This is the one that worked for me:

Hey castorquinn, Been a long time since the last post here, but just in case it's never been resolved, I had the exact same problem with Syberia you describe. I have logitech 5.1 surround speakers with a little matrix button on the wired in speaker control pad. I think the matrix button is a dolby-esque sound processing technology that Syberia's dialogue tracks cannot decode properly so it just doesn't read it at all. As soon as I disabled matrix it worked like a charm.

hey bud the solution is to double click on the realtek hd audio manager red icon on the taskbar,go to the speaker bit and click on environment, then if the setting say none just add on,i.e padded cell.this should activate 5.1 as it did for me
I'm having this problem... I also don't get any background music at the first scene (not the custcene), but I don't know if I'm supposed to. I also dont get any sound when the toy at the reception rings the bell. I am getting the sound of footsteps. Compatibility mode does nothing.
Second game I have a sound problem with. First one is Bad Mojo Redux, which I filed a ticked for support but GOG hasn't replied. How long do they usually take to do or say something?

I don't have realtek audio so I don't know how to fix this.
