Arclight386: Tried all this but it didn't solve my trouble; game plays half a second of sound and crashes. Prolly need to configure something for that Xvid codec or something, the converted videos play fine in WMP but when the game tries playing it back it's just a no-go.

Anyway, figured I'd try some launch parameters: http://swat3.furrycat.net/commandline.html

First I tried the -nointro one, but that doesn't seem to do anything. Still hear the sliver of sound so it seems it still tries to play the vids. Then I tried -software to force software rendering, and that did the trick.

Not the most ideal solution, but at least it's running. Perhaps it's of help to someone else as well.

EDIT: Well, darn. Some time ago, I was having some trouble with a game, can't recall which one. A friend of mine then suggested to switch DEP from it's default setting to the alternative using an exceptions list.

Of course, the general troubleshooting guide here on GoG tells you to set it to its default setting... So I did that, and all works fine without launch parameters or additional compatibility settings.

Lesson learned: never take PC advice from someone who knows less about PCs than you do.
Can you explain that DEP thing please?
I have done the dx update from 2010, I have added the videos and they run fine in normal media player, yet I am still getting the error message. This is more annoying because I was playing fine yesterday.

Edit: I did the -nointro and it totally worked. However when I loaded up a save game the avi files would not play and it crashed the game, forgot to back up origional movies so am reinstalling now. Sigh

What the frick now the movies are not working at all, even with a clean install, I cannot believe this I was playing fine yesterday!! Hope GOG do refunds this is ridiculous

so my issue is a little different and im computer illiterate which doesn't help. the game launches fine, however its cropping out the sides of the screen. It as if its zoomed into whichever screen im on, and i cant click off sceen either. does anybody know how I can fix this issue? Please try to keep the instructions simple...
I am still having a problem with the game after trying to download active x and installing the codec. The generic error no longer pops up and when the game gets to the loading scenarios bar, it fills up. However at this point audio begins to play for about 10 seconds and the video freezes. I lose access to my mouse and the audio disappears and the full screen just shows the full loading scenarios bar. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Heya guys,

Believe it or not this crash is caused by later versions of Windows not supporting a codec that the original Swat 3 movies were encoded with. Sometimes you get the DDERR GENERIC error message and sometimes you don't.

You can read more about this issue at the following page:

http://www.swat3lastresort.info/index.php/swat-3-video-directx-fix

There is a work-around to get it to work in Windows 7 for some people (doesn't work for every system). If you set the game executable (swat.exe and mod.exe) to run in Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode. You do this in the properties when you right click over the files.

Personally I recommend the movie replacement fix.

For all those desperate souls just like me who tried all the tips like:

- Install Direct X June 2010
- Turn off DEP
- Install Xvid
- Replace videos
- Turn on compatibility mode

and still didn't succeed in launching the game, try following:

Start menu ==> Programs ==> Xvid ==> Configure Decoder ==> Tick "Compatibility Renderer"

Worked like a charm for me, without having to turn off DEP and using compatibility mode. Using WinXP Pro SP3 x86.

It's really sad that GOG doesn't include a troubleshooting for this DDERR error in the FAQ of Swat 3, because this error seems to concern everyone buying the game.

For anyone who has tried all of the above and still got the error, I had to install the CCCP Codec Pack from the CCCP Project which did the trick
write:

\swat.exe" -nointro

in shortcut

I had this problem on Windows 7 64 bit my fix was because i wasn't running the game as Windows XP Service Pack 2. After changing compatible mode to Windows XP Service Pack 2 worked fine made no other changes before trying as Windows XP.
I encountered now the same problem. Strangely enough the game was working fine some month ago. Yesterday I started it again and now I face the DDERR_GENERIC error. I tried everything that was mentioned here and in other threads but the problem persists.

This. Thank you!

I'm running 64-bit Windows 7 and ticking "Compatibility Renderer" on the Xvid settings worked for me – after I had replaced the original movie files with the Xvid codec ones.

I did, however, install the June 2010 DirectX before that. Not sure if that helped as well... It didn't on its own at least.

Also: I run this in XP Service Pack 2 compatibility mode, as opposed to Service Pack 3, which was the GOG default.

You are right. Windows XP SP3. Did all of the above, or below, to no avail. Then your advice did the trick. Thanks.

EDIT: Not really. If you go to Education, the same problem returns, DDERR...
