does anyone know anything about progress with compatibility to Forged Alliance Forever? The last update I found dates back to the beginning of June 2020. The gist of it being the lack of response from Square Enix.

Via GOG Support, I learned GOG has no plans to bring the game to version 3603 which is necessary for FAF support.

its not just a different version. FAF requires some way for the GOG API to verify that a particular GOG account OWNS SC and more importantly FA. FAF requires Steamlinking to safeguard against becoming a haven for piracy which could be perceived by SquareEnix to delegitimize FAFs existence.

It is however possible to play online with GameRanger. Ive created a Discord specifically for GOG supcom on gameranger

I would think that the GOG feature that exposes user's games (< https://www.gog.com/u/$username/games >) would suffice for validation. Even if it didn't, if Forged Alliance Forever handled their file distribution a little more cleverly (such as not distributing full game assets, and instead only shipping deltas between the official game and the modified game), they wouldn't be giving playable copies of the game to anyone who doesn't already have a working copy.

Online play is also possible through direct IP connection, if you know the IP address of the game host. It's not a great solution for finding people you don't know, but it works fine for playing with friends.

GOG does not generally read their game forums. If you need to contact the support team, you should e-mail support@gog.com, then wait 4-12 weeks for them to refuse to help you.

The Steam version is based on 3603, and FAF only works with the Steam version as their method of authenticating a valid installation relies on Steam's authentication. Since all Steam users are on 3603, there's no need for FAF to distribute the 3603 patch with their own. You can't even use a retail version and fully update it unless you redeem the serial key on Steam.
