Hi
First I would like to thank GOG for releasing this awsome game ! Since my cd was lost, I never thought I would find this game again.
So far, it runs perfectly on my vista 32, but while I zoom out to check if my keep if enclosed, I got a tearing effect when moving around the map. This never happened to me back on win 98, so I guess it was a refresh rate issue, but my screen is already at max (75 Mhz) and the ingame resolution I use is native 800*600, so...
If someone's had the same problem and solved it I will be glad to share his/her experienced.

I would invest in new video card or try and bump up the memory. Sounds like classic example.. Might want to try and lower resolution settings on the game itself if that is possible. Hope this helps. Make sure you have the latest firmware updates for your graphics driver by going to the makers website.

Tearing is usually caused by modern graphics cards being able to render the display a lot faster than your monitor can actually show it on screen. As such, buying a new graphics card will not solve the issue as a newer one will still render it much faster.
To prevent tearing you need such things as v-sync, so that the graphics card output is limited to the refresh rate of the monitor. Some games have the option to use v-sync, but if it's not there you can try setting it as an application specific setting in your graphics drivers. The drivers should allow you to force v-sync on, and you might be able to have this setting switch on automatically for applications you use.
Definitely look at forcing v-sync before buying new hardware.
Other things you can try is running it in a window so that the graphics card is displaying the Windows environment and the game, thus having more to do and maybe improving the issue you are experiencing.

Thanks a lot ! I thought I could not activate v-sync for this game, but I fortunately made an update for nvidia control panel and I can now enable v-sync for any applications I want.
I'll try it, but I'm already sure It's gonna work !

Let me know whether it works for you. I've bought both of the Stronghold games from GOG but haven't got around to installing them, and it's likely that if it is a v-sync issue that I'll need to do it too.

Unfortunately, this doesn't work for me... I tried forcing v-sync on stronghold.exe and stronghold_crusader.exe and none of them seemed to be vsynced (I loaded a siege map like camelot and the result is still terrible when zooming out and sliding).
I'm sorry for these bad news but maybe i'll work on your rig.

Have you tried running in a windowed mode and different resolutions? Are all graphics settings on and turned up to high where applicable (I can't remember what settings you have available as it's not a true 3D game).
Also, something else you can try, is running it on a single core (therefore not using as fast processing speed which might help). Once the app is running, get to the Windows Task Manager and find the Stronghold process. Right-click the process name and use the Set Affinity option to select only your first core of your processor (Core 0 I think it is).
Maybe running in XP compatibility mode could help?
Let me know how you get on with these.
