It appears this game has some requirements that seem prohibitive to me. Having to download steam or GOG galaxy. Having to register a paradox account in order to play the game. Can the game run without both of these?

You can download offline installers and play with no client whatsoever. Single player is perfectly playable on its own.
Paradox account is needed for online features (multiplayer, achievements, cloud saves)

So no offline Lan mode? I already have that game on Steam, only reason for would be an offline lan mode.

Achivements and cloud saves? But the game doesn't support those right now. By the way, is support for Galaxy achivements/cloud saves planned?

Update: got the developers to comment on the Galaxy features support: http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/stellaris-on-gog-please-add-achievements-and-cloud-saves.1121925/#post-24707096

Why does it list LAN:

Special multiplayer requirements: Internet Connection or LAN for multiplayer.

If it does not, in effect allow for LAN support o.0;

+1

Can somebody please clarify if we can play LAN games without installing any client software (i. e. galaxy) and without an active internet connection? Thank you!

I have come precisely to ask this, the game for now doesn't support achievements and cloud saves, they will be added shortly?

Both are handled by Paradox account system and are accessible in-game.

Thanks for the answer, so their counterparts on GOG Galaxy will not be added (at least for now)? Because Steam for example has them.

Achievments are already supported but only in the game but not by GoG Galaxy.
So in my opinion needing a Paradox account to play the mulitplayer is not DRM really.. there are a lot of games where you need an account to play the online portion. Its not GOGs fault to require you to make an account.
yes and no... the game is designed to run from a Paradox account and any save games, custom empires, achievements or multiplayer links to that account
gog version = cloud saves don't work yet
gog version can play without a making a Paradox account but if you do make a Paradox account then a notepad file will be placed in your game folder i.e, Documents\Paradox Interactive\Stellaris (whereever the default system documents go) called pdx_login.txt this has your account email and password and you need to copy | paste it if you want another gog to use the same saves, empires etc

the user_empire_designs.txt file has your saved empires for that Paradox account and any local save games (ironman or not) also link to the Paradox account... so if you just copy the save games from a laptop to a desktop and don't also copy the login file they won't show up but if you do then they will
