Title says it all. I get that Cayne is somhow a sequel, but is it really, story-wise? Is there any recommendation on which one to play first?

I very much recommend playing Stasis first. You can play and finish Cayne without having any knowledge of Stasis whatsoever but due to several backstory references and moments of insight, Cayne will be a more satisfying experience if you play Stasis first.

It's funny, though. Cayne is a free prequel, but looks better in terms of production values – graphics, animations, speech... It offers a shorter and tighter experience, and helps you understand Stasis better. But I'd still pick Stasis first as it has the better overall atmosphere of helplessness and horror.
