For some reason the sizes of successive saves increase beyond all reason. This eventually causes the game to become nigh-unresponsive. Has anyone encountered this problem?

I'm playing on macOS 13.2.

Sorry abput this. it is a very rare bu that is caused by a corrupted save. Can you graba fresh save here:
https://www.gog.com/forum/stasis_series/list_of_save_games_general_troubleshooting

And play from this save rather -
