The game installs fine, but I can't even get it to load the startup screen. Clicking on the Startopia app causes a series of error boxes to pop up. Has anyone else had this problem?

Your card can't hack it, switching to software rasterizer. MAybe you aren't in 16 or 32 bit colour mode?
then
Bad display mode

Now THATS'S what I call an error.

My first guess would be that your card doesn't support the either the default 640X480 res or is having problems recognizing the desktop resolution ( 1768 x 992 ).

First Try changing your desktop resolution to the monitors native one and see is that works.

then try

https://www.wsgf.org/dr/startopia/en

to enable widescreen resolutions

I wonder if this is related to the Direct3D problem I'm having.

And Quantum, I SO feel your pain. I'm want to play this again!

I have the same graphics card as the original poster, and I had similar problems.
Atfer looking around on the net, I found an old post from the developers that described a method for changing screen resolution of the game.
I right-clicked the icon for startopia icon, went to properties, and wrote "/r1280x1024x32" in the comment section, and then the game worked.

Hope it helps.
I shall try this as soon as I get home, will update. Thanks for the info!

UPDATE - It won't allow me to put a / in the file name. Running Win7...going to try and find a way to run it with that command line inserted. Can't find a comment section in the properties of the application either. :-|

HOORAY! Got it working using the above mentioned command line "/r1280x1024x32"

What I did was create a shortcut to the application "startopia.exe" then added /r1280x1024x32 AFTER the "startopia.exe"

So the target file area said this - "C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\StarTopia\startopia.exe" /r1280x1024x32

Hope this helps anyone else having this problem.
Now on to find the patch to make it widescreen :-)
Having the same problem. Unfortunately the fix didn't work... I'll keep trying.

Ah, I changed it to 1920x1080 and it worked.

Thanks!
