curtinparloe: I'm about to try and get it working on macosx, however...
If you go to the original al starship titanic website there's a fix for the broken video issue, it's not a codec but a dll that isn't backwards compatible.

I hoped that the gog version would have addressed some of these problems.

MarkoH01: In fact the dll (if it's the one I think you are talking of) is part of the codec (cinepak) and afaik GOG already has included this version. The dll is meant to make the game XP compatible though - could not find anything about MAC atm.
Okidoke. At the time I was installing from the original CDs. :)
ITS WORKING!!!!!!!!

I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 10. I tried the game and it works perfectly. I dunno if that will help others, but its so good to finally be able to play the game! :D

Congrats that you managed it. For me Win10 would not be a solution because I really don't like it. But if you are O.K. with it you've won and I am happy for you :P
You know, I just realised. After all the help you gave and the hard work you put in coming up with solutions, I never properly thanked you for your efforts.

So thank you. Your help was greatly appreciated :)

Oh there ios no need to thank me at all. I have fun in trying to figure out such problems. Especially if I own the game myself, but you're welcome :)

You spare me a lot of wasted time. Thanks for the solution, it's working perfectly.
Just to jump on the bandwagon here, by default the game freezes at the first change of direction. When i delete the ICCVID.dll in the game directory i can continue on, albeit with a black screen as long as videos are played.
Trying to open the .avi files in the assets folder confirms the codec incompability, VLC player can play them without problems, any player relying on installed codecs can not. My old virtual machine version works flawlessly, has anyone tried DOSbox with Win98 installed?

have you tried using the wrappers I mentioned above (dgvoodoo2, dxwnd)?

I did. They're working, but they have no effect on the freezing/black videos issue.
Recompressing all the game videos that use Cinepak to MPEG4 did work for me so far though.

You could also try to fins another version of the codec.
I suppose uninstalling every codec *but* Cinepak would work, but recompressing the videos is actually far faster than finding out which combination of codecs would work the game.

The problem of codecs conflicting with each other is the reason I have no additional codec installed on my PC. So far no problem since the games which require special codes usually are coming with them included.
VLC wouldn't require any codecs installed at all, but i've enough old video files around and almost each uses a different compression. I also don't want to miss BSplayer.
By now most formats are handled by FFDshow, but if it's that Cinepak is in conflict with, well, i won't uninstall it for just one game. Especially if the largest video in ST took me 5 seconds to recompress.

FFDshow(trials) is hardly the cause of your problem (but it's easy to test since you can activate/deactivate the different codecs to see if this helps). BSPlayer for sure is not the cause of the problem since it uses plugins which are only used by bsplayer. Afaik it also uses an FFDshow plugin so no need to install an additional copy of it. I have only installed BSPlayer on my PC and so far I can watch every video I want, including flv and mkv containers.
