ConcernedApe has announced on Twitter that he's working on another update focusing on modding capabilities and adding some new content:

There is going to be a Stardew 1.6 update. It's mostly changes for modders (which will make it easier & more powerful to mod). But there is also new game content, albeit much less than 1.5. I'm taking a break from Haunted Chocolatier to work on this at the moment. Then back to HC

He's actually one of the more responsible ones. We don't get every mini patch, but we get all the bigger ones.
At that time I had a different impression.

The 1.6 update will be released March 19 2024. Can't wait. Hopefully we don't have to wait long for mods to get updated.

SMAPI has been regularly reminding people to update, and CS has been working with them to make the transition smooth.
