Hello,

My friend has just bought a copy of Stardew Valley to join me playing on Linux (as advertised it can do), however when he launches his copy from GOG it doesn't show him the option to join via invite code. After some digging I discovered he needs to logged into GOG Galaxy.

We both play on Linux and after spending a long time looking into it I found this at the bottom of the store page:
"Multiplayer Notice: Multiplayer is available online via GOG Galaxy, as well as via LAN and Direct IP. All multiplayer connection methods are cross-compatible with the Steam version of the game."

It specifies lan *AND* Direct IP. I can understand the game requiring Galaxy (BS though since Galaxy is Windows only and the game advertises linux compatibility AND Galaxy is meant to be optional), but what I can't understand is why Direct IP doesn't work if it's written there?

This small print warning needs to be reworded and made more prominent!

Do you guys both have the same version of the game? It should work even with linux if you use the LAN method. I never played any multiplayer so I can't confirm but according to other people it should work without galaxy
The invite-code system is GOG only, but if you can just use the direct IP method instead.
I'm trying to play multiplayer with another GOG user and we are both friended and using Galaxy. We have the same version and the firewall isnt blocking it. However, the Enter invite code is not present, and show invite code is not present either
So is the Direct IP method for LAN games only?
Hello, I want to buy this game to play with friend in COOP online. Can I do this "from the box" or I need to do somrthing else? Please help to understand :).

Yes and no. You can use a virtual LAN like Himachi, but I have no experience with that sort of stuff. But yeah, it's based on LAN gaming

If you have an offline version of the game, you need to be connected on the same network. Through Steam and GOG Galaxy it works with an invite code, so you don't need to do anything else.

No, it works over the Internet also. I've played with a friend like that and can confirm that it works as of 1.5.2, and don't have any reason to believe that the previous versions aren't able to do the same. Use your external IP when connecting (you can look it up on https://www.canyouseeme.org/ for example) and make sure to forward port 24642 for TCP/UDP to your computer that will be hosting (reference: https://www.stardewvalley.net/multiplayer-troubleshooting-guide/).
In my case those ports were set on the router, which handles the firewall on my network, but your network setup might look different and you might have to configure any other firewalls accordingly.

I did this and it worked for me right away.

PS.
To clarify, there is no need whatsoever to use any virtual network program.
TL;DR - This entire post is pointless. Literally pointless. The only thing it does for people who don't read enough to know the OP has no clue what they are talking about is to make a negative impression on the game and/or GOG.

Holy Hades, I learned how to address this when I was 15, back in 1995, when most people in my town did not even know what the hell the internet was. Now, in a time where there are at least thousands, if not millions, of help articles less than 10 seconds away to show one what is needed, someone makes this kind of post?!?

Seriously, the only thing that this post does, thanks to the ignorance of the OP, is to cast doubt on the platform (GOG), the developer (ConcernedApe), and the game (Stardew Valley). It does no more. If you cannot be bothered to spend even a modicum of time researching / learning about a topic that you aren't informed enough about, then do not go online and basically call out everyone but yourself when facing basic multiplayer issues. I have had ZERO issues, ever, getting this game to connect to people, regardless of running GOG Galaxy (which I use). Neither has anyone I have played with ever had issues. It is basic networking; the kind that has many how-tos out there which could step through even a 80-year old non-technical person, were they so inclined to fix their "problems."

You might think my post is rather negative, but I just can't be bothered to be any nicer to people who spread incorrect information while being partially to wholly ignorant about the topic they are making claims about. It is unacceptable. If the OP had even bothered to form things more in a questioning manner, I might let it go, but the entire second half of their post was nothing but accusatory.

Well, your post isn't really helping the platform either. Instead of furthering GOG as a platform with a helpful and welcoming community, the only point you just proved is that of a hostile community with a "just get good" attitude to compatibility questions.
You sabotaged your own goal.
Seems like someone was saying if you want a GPS system that tells you to turn right at next intersection, you should not be driving.
Everyone is different. if a millionaire rather hire a chauffeur than learn to drive, he shouldn't enjoy riding in a car?
