I have programmed my X-Arcade Tankstick to play this game but I am encountering a critical problem: I do not know for the life of me how to emulate the Second Mouse Button / Button 2 via key. Button 1 is ENTER. I have read in some places that U should correspond to Button 2 but it is not the case.

U does not do anything in my game. The problem with this is that Button 2 is used for rolling and without it I am forced to use the mouse (instead of the trackball) for flying, shooting and rolling.

Any help?

I have a Swedish keyboard but the U letter is placed on the same position so it can not be that but thanks anyway.

That's odd, ENTER should be the match speed key. At least according to this wiki list of controls, which says "fire" is mapped to ALT-2 and "roll / target ship in sights" is mapped to ALT-3:

Maybe try mapping your stick for those ALT combos and see if it works?

I can confirm that ENTER was the match speed key in TIE Fighter, so it would make sense if it was the same in X-Wing, but I haven't played X-Wing yet.

First of all: I solved the issue by using AutoHotKey, a nice software that allows you to remap keys and mouse buttons.

Waltorious, you seem to be misinformed about the controls:

ENTER matches speed on games later than X Wing Collector's Edition. In the 1993-94 X Wing DOS games (CD/Floppy), what it does is Fire. And the ALT+2 or ALT+3 do not apply either.

I am by the way playing with the TankStick and I am very satisfied. I am using a TrackBall instead of amouse/joypad to control the aircraft and in order to do that with a certain degree of effectiveness I had to crank up the Mouse Sensitivity in the config file (from the default 100 to 1000).

Still, those TIE Advanced are real pesky! Really hard to aim at them...

They were mostly not different, but TIE Fighter has added several features which make the gameplay considerably easier.
I have just played through TIE (DOS CD) and am playing X-Wing (DOS CD) after it, and that's what I am missing the most:
- ENTER to match speed.
- E to select the nearest attacking enemy.
- R to be able to target mines / shuttles / transports and to ignore disabled craft.
- G to display mission goals (the way it is in X-W, you need to lose a mission at least once to see all the objectives)

Isn't the X-arcade tankstick digital?
These games are best played with an analog joystick.

I use the trackball for controlling the ship. It works very well, provided you set the sensitivity in the .ini file to a very high value.

Oh, yes, I forgot it had a trackball.

Still, a proper stick like the T-16000, the extreme 3D Pro or any CH is way more immersive even without going full HOTAS like I did last month.

Can I use keyboard on X-Wing (DOS and CD Version) or is a arcade stick a must-have? I know that keyboard and mouse works, but is it also playable?

Many here completed the game with mouse andkeyboard or keyboard only. ;)

Also, the game is not made for arcade sticks (that are digital) but for flightsim joysticks (that are alway analog), the guy above used the trackball to emulate the mouse not the arcade stick itself.

Thx for your response. Then I will try to stay with the keyboard and mouse. But in the training mission my mouse was really "unsensitive". Turning around with the x-wing is a really hard job.^^ Is that normal?

An Arcade Stick would be nice I think, also for games like Street Fighter 4, but I'm not playing much of these games. So I think I should stay with keyboard and my 360 pad when possible.
