Before I buy this great game, can anyone answer how they fixed the multiplayer component. Can I play LAN without 3rd party programs?

On my cd version, I had to use GameRanger to play LAN.

Thanks!

Weeell... I own the original Game and I've never played it in Multiplayer myself, but I know that ever since 2004, Microsoft stopped hosting the Online Servers for the Game [the Online Stuff was provided by Microsofts "MSN Gaming Zone" until then]. That means: The Game was designed to connect to a central Server online - which doesn't exist anymore nowadays. There's nothing that GoG can do about that.

The only Way to play it in Multiplayer today is...

Either playing it with Friends within the same Network [actual "LAN", Local Area Network], wich means... physically, at your House, with the same Cables. Everyone coming over like the old Days. Probably configuring everyones Firewalls and the Router to allow the PCs to communicate directly and the Game to work. If you never did any of this, you probably never even played an actual "LAN" Game before.

Or instead, you can play by the Use of one of the many Tools you can chose from today to emulate such a LAN as a Virtual Local Area Network over the Internet. Those "VLANS" enable you to play Games in your PCs presumably 'local' Network, which by the Help of those Programs and the Internet is extended to your Friends PCs. It's like stretching that physical Cable all over the Internet, to their PCs, virtually. The Programs install themselves like a Network Card and register as a local Network Connection, which is what the Game is looking for when selecting LAN. *Waves Hand* "This is exactly the Network you're looking for, Game."

So, I'm pretty sure that's what GameRanger does essentially, just like Hamachi to name another Example: It creates a Virtual Network via VPN Tunnel to emulate a LAN. If you needed to use GameRanger, I guess you never really played an actual LAN Game yet anyways, because you wouldn't need any Tool or Internet Connectivity to play the Game via actual LAN. If your Friends aren't at your Location, that's the only Way to go, as far as I'm aware.

TL;DR:
- Playing the Game with Friends via online after 2004? You need such a Tool.
- Playing the Game with Friends at your House? No Need for such a Tool, nor the Internet.

> Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks. I know what LAN is :) I asked because I had problems with ACTUAL LAN connection on the original game. I will buy the game anyway, I really just wanted to know if there are any problems in a physical LAN game.

Hmmh, well, can't confirm or deny Problems there. =P

But I'd bet it's all because of Configuration Issues of the Network itself, then. Like the good old Days, getting together, and spending the whole first Day figuring out how to connect the PCs properly so Games will actually work. Guess if Latency is no Problem, Hamachi and the other Tools are easier to use for People who don't know how to set up a LAN Gaming Environment quickly [as we did back in the Day].

I've got Hamachi installed either Way, and for up to... 5 People it is, I guess, it's still all free.
Just install and register and you're set for Multiplayer Games with 4 Friends.
Never did it yet, but I'd love to. Why does none of my Friends have a Joystick?!
Those aren't the only ways to get into a match. Once someone decides to host a match the other players can IP into it. You can enter the host ip yourself or there's button in the mp menu you can hit to find it.

Sure it was always easier when the zone hosted a central lobby, or the xwa community used to have a "fan" made lobby to connect with.
Im pretty sure the WAN ip address work as well... No need to setup a virtual LAN...

In actuality all MSN ZONE did was relay the ip address to the game through some backend.

Forgive me if I misunderstood, but is it not possible to play "Direct IP"? I imagine the steps would be:

1. Host opens necessary ports (source: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/x-wing) on their router:
TCP 2300-2400
UDP 2300-2400
TCP 47624
UDP 6073

2. Host gives the other players their IP address.

3. Host starts XWA, hits Host Game --> TCP.

4. Joiners type in IP address of the host.

5. With some luck, the multiplayer should work.
Forgot to mention: I used to use Voobly in ~2011. It still exists. Would this not be a feasible matchmaking service?

Well GameRanger supports Xwing Alliance as with XvT/BoP. If you need a service. I think it's more popular...Although it crashes left and right for me.

Right FSHero. WAN ip (with proper port forwarding) will work fine, it's how these services do it.

Thanks, this worked perfectly. I was able to host a game and have my friend join. We played, we blew up tie fighters, it was glorious!

Glad to have helped someone out!

I might check out GameRanger or Voobly again; unfortunately none of my close friends have X-Wing Alliance. Unless anyone knows of any clans that regularly play?

Zanriel:
I'm hoping to get multiplayer working with this using direct-ip and/or LAN soon also, thanks for the info above everyone, hopefully it should work without a hitch as I'd prefer to avoid 3rd party apps.
