Just wondering if anybody else has the same problem... as long as I have a joystick (Warthog HOTAS) plugged in, my ship tugs very slightly to the right at all times. It's not game-breaking, but it's super annoying to constantly compensate for it.

It doesn't appear to be a deadzone problem. I've used TARGET software to expand the deadzone to 90% just to troubleshoot, and the ship still tugs right. Even weirder, even though you can control the mouse pointer with the stick between missions, it doesn't exhibit the same problem. It stays perfectly still unless you move the stick. It's only in flight. I've also tried fiddling with the axes on the throttle to see if maybe they were impacting the game, but no avail.

If I disconnect the controller and switch to mouse-only controls, ships fly straight and true. And I don't have the same problem in TIE Fighter, which controls beautifully.

Any ideas? I'm at my wits end.
Have you tried calibrating the joystick in windows?

No. I'll give it a shot, but like I said, even with the deadzone set to 90% (which should more than cover a slightly off-center calibration), the problem persists. Plus the game itself prompts you to calibrate at startup, which should inherently correct any pre-existing calibration problem as well.

Very strange.
Maybe if you can edit the Dosbox .conf file and make the line:

[joystick]
timed=false

Ooooh -- good call. I'll see if that's possible tonight.

You're a genius -- that worked perfectly. Thank you!

No problem, glad it helped. :^)

Thanks for the suggestion also. Was wondering why only X-Wing was exhibiting this problem and not TIE Fighter for my stick. Apparently TIE already had the flag set to false.
Worked for me, too! Thanks, the game was unplayable :)
Any other ideas for this issue?

I'm using a Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog. When running TARGET, I get a constant pull up and right regardless of my timed setting. If I turn TARGET off, I get a jerky right or up and right movement periodically... every .5-1 second.

I've calibrated to the point of nausea and have tried searching for other resolutions but have come up pretty empty.

Which game has this problem, the DOS or Windows version?
Regardless of the version, what you can do is open the windows gamecontrollerpanel and set the joystick to the preferred device.

It's the 1995 Collectors CD Version. I do have the stick set as the preferred device for older games. It doesn't drift in the menus or according to the TARGET diagnostics... just in flight portion of the game itself.

You could try the patch linked here:

Already had to do that just to get the joystick recognized. Been trying a number of things on and off, but still haven't been able to get it worked out. It basically makes the game unplayable for me.

Try changing the joysticktype setting in your configuration file. Common settings include 2axis and fcs. See if one of those fixes it.
