I just tried to patch the files. The files are patched but it doesn't enable 3d. Still turns off.

AMD dropped support for early DirectX versions some time ago. You need to roll back drivers to Cat 13.1 or put this dll file into the XvT and BoP directories. That dll file might not be compatible with newer gpus or operating systems though.

For the base game you could also give dgvoodoo a shot.

SumoX: I tried the updated 'installers' to enable 3D but can't get either to work for me at present. I also tried rolling back to drivers that others have said works to no avail. Bummer.

I'll muck around with it later.
If you downloaded the modifications I posted 2 days ago there's no need to use these patches.

Earlier you said you could enable 3D mode but it turned objects invisible. Did it stop working completely now?

Btw gerwin made a few modifications to the BoP patch. He'll probably put it up for download in the vogons.org thread soon. It might work better for some people.

No it was the patchers you uploaded in post 20 of the thread.

It still works- it's just all invisible still. Well, that's true for BoP. The base game has a really weird red screen covering all menus where you can only see anything if the mouse cursor is on the far edge of the screen. In-game, it's just a black screen.

I'm sort of running out of ideas. Is there any other settings in your (and I ask this question to anyone) game that you've altered?

I'll definitely check out the vogons thread to see if anything there will fix my situation.

That could be the reason. According to some XvT troubleshooting guides this glitch is pretty common on Windows 8 and the only solution they give is using a different OS. I'd say your best bet is probably dgvoodoo once it fully supports this game.

Thanks for all the help. I have another computer that I don't usually use for gaming that runs Windows 7. I'll try it out that one later just to see if it works.
Some findings concerning the freezes during videos:

Videos freezing on their own was caused by some other software interfering with the game.

Balance of Power:
Appears to be completely fine

X-Wing vs Tie Fighter:
If you try to skip in the middle of the movie the game freezes sometimes so if you want to do that do it right at the beginning.
EDIT
Skipping the intro movie only locks the game if you start Z_XVT__.exe directly not when you run the game from the launcher.
Unfortunately forcing AA on the main game makes objects invisible on both the AMD and Nvidia systems I tested with. Currently the only way to have real AA is dgvoodoo but it shows a black screen when using the launcher unless you disable the intro movie.
Really a vexing problem.

I updated the thread at vogons with a slightly adjusted Xvt-BoP Hardware 3D patch. Also I wrote a little about the different executables for this game.
The DirectX wrapper dgVoodoo now supports Balance of Power so if you still have issues with 3D acceleration give it a try
http://dege.freeweb.hu/

The only problem is that XWA Hackers Fixedclear fix (included with the 3D patch) is incompatible with dgVoodoo so you have to remove it first (credit goes to Darklord42 for finding this out). To do so download XWA Hacker http://sourceforge.net/projects/xwahacker/files/xwahacker-2.5.zip/download , copy xwahacker.exe and xvtnofixedclear.bat to the game directory and run xvtnofixedclear.bat.
New version of dgVoodoo is compatible with the fixedclear fix.

Can you explain how this works and how to install it to get 3d to work?
It's a wrapper. It translates the instructions of whatever DirectX version BoP uses into DirectX 11 instructions.

To install it copy dgVoodooSetup.exe, D3DImm.dll and DDraw.dll to the game directories (C:\GOG Games\Star Wars - XvT and C:\GOG Games\Star Wars - XvT\BalanceOfPower).

Then run dgVoodooSetup.exe, select the game folder by clicking on ".\" and make sure that dgVoodoo Virtual 3D Accelerated Card is selected on the DirectX tab. With dgVoodooSetup you can also configure various options like Antialiasing.

When running the DGvoodoo2 setup file or running the game after patching the game EXE and putting the DLLs and the config file in the game exe folder?
