I put this together for the XWing special edition but it seems to work fine with Tie Fighter as well so I'll pimp it to you here.

I couldn't get the twist axis working but I remapped button d on the throttle to be target and roll toggle.

Key features.

Trigger fires, second stage matches speed to target
Hat switch looks around
Second hat switch left and right cycles targets, up switch targeting mode and down targets nearest enemy.
C toggles shields fore and aft
A switches weapons
B toggles link fire modes
i (if you disable clutch mode in the driver) is s-foils
E is hyperspace

T1 Laser power setting
T2 Sheild power setting
T3 divert shield to laser
T4 divert laser to sheild

Throttle works quite nicely though only has the 4 positions.

So you're using teh Saitek software to remap this rather than the in game menu?

Yeah, if you download the X-52 Pro software from the Saitek website, you have something called "Profile Editor" under the start menu folder "Smart Technology". You should be able to open the file in that application and choose to test the profile to activate it. Then just run the game and all the buttons will be working as Saurbaum listed.

There isn't an in-game menu, at least not in the original version. Not sure about 1998.

i cant seem to get roll to work on mine, nothing is mapped to D in the profile, also i cant seem to hold the fire button it only fires once then i need to click again, any ideas? awesome otherwise!

Hey, good work man, I tweaked it a bit to work with the DOS version.

The fire button is now mapped to mouse 1, and the D button is mouse 2, should solve the above firing problem and allow D to roll the ship. I also added Z-rotating to rotate the ship and throttle control using the bands function in the programming software. The FIRE button maps to target whatevers in your sights. Cheers

Yeah, I think the file is corrupt or something. I'm not getting anything out of it. But here's what you can do. (I'm currently starting with the 1993 release of X-Wing.) AND I figured out how to get the rudder to work.

The alternate hotkeys for rolls are <ctrl>+<left arrow> OR <ctrl>+<right arrow>. That's the key combination you need for each twist of the joystick. Now, in the Saitek software, you'll see "Rudder". Twisting the joystick will bring you to this as well. While hovering over the "Rudder" section, you'll see a gray box with an arrow in it. Click this to reveal a menu. Choose "Directional Axis". Now you should see "Rudder +" and "Rudder -" options; each will take a set of key commands. Here, you'll put in what you need to get the rudders working for Rolling your craft.

How do you get this to work? I have the profile selected but in-game only the fire button works. the other dont do anything...

Yeah, I'm having problems with this. I'll try to find out what's going on and I'll post my findings and my profile.

Incidentally, when I first posted, I was using an X52. This profile SauerBaum posted is NOT compatible with the X52. But that's cool. Once we figure out how to get this working, it'll be easy for X52 users to make their own. For Christmas, I got an X52 Pro, which I'll be using here on out.

I'll warrant the solution for the X52 Pro is the same as the X52.

Ok, many of my problems were driver related. Saitek/Madcatz doesn't know how to test their crap or update it. I also believe that the profile format changes from various versions of the software. I think that's why other people's profiles didn't work for me.

So, I mapped the Roll functionality to my X52 Pro's "twist". Here's my profile file: http://www.mediafire.com/download/3i51ocuk7c6o4gh/XWing_1993_x52_pro.pr0

The twist is the only thing I've done so far. Now, it doesn't behave like normal roll functionality on modern games - there's a huge lag, and the rolling isn't quick. It's quite unresponsive, but if you hold the twist - it'll work and you'll be able to roll while moving the joystick around as well. This is just THE GAME and not the joystick. Using the keys as mentioned above on the keyboard acts exactly the same way. Remember to HOLD them down for a LONG TIME.

On the twist menu, select "BANDS". Right-click on the top twist and select "New Advanced Command". Here, you can put your keystrokes in and delete the ones you don't need. Remember to right-click on that text area and select "Quantize Time". Set it to Zero and go. This makes both key presses occur at the same moment in time instead of one after another. If you have trouble, you can look up X52 programming on Youtube.

To be honest, you might want to bind the roll functionality to a couple of buttons - perhaps the hat on the throttle. I'm thinking of trying that out myself.

I'll also leave this little tidbit here: Other than the fact that Saitek's drivers are crap, they don't play well AT ALL with xHCI USB 3 support. So I had to disable this in my BIOS. THEN I had problems getting the driver install to even RUN properly, but that's a story for another time. However, the files I installed with were:
