I installed the 98 version and when i try to launch it a window pops up informing me that i need a joystick to play. Which is all well and good except for the Saitek X52 throttle and stick sitting next to me whose lights indicate to me that it is in fact plugged into my computer. My ability to fly with them in other games also backs up this conclusion. I am at a loss, and im sure it has a lot to do with TIE Fighter being a older game but any help is greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

I'm having the exact same issue. I went and bought a joystick today just for this game and it won't recognize it. It's weird though, cuz the game itself won't recognize the joystick, but in the "configure joystick" menu, my joystick is listed and can move the axis and buttons... I'm confused...

Similar problem. I DLed these games and ordered a joystick from amazon right away. I was excited to play these! The 1998 versions don't even acknowledge that I have a joystick plugged in, and when I play the 1994 version of TIE fighter the colors are all screwed up.

This is frustrating an disappointing.
Go see in the "Advanced" section of the Windows gamecontrollers panel if the joystick you want to use is the prefered device.
Alternatively you can unplug all unneeded gamecontrollers.

Open dosbox_tie.conf in a text editor, find the line output=overlay and change it to output=opengl

Hey thanks man! That seems to have worked. Any tips on getting the 1998 games to recognize my joystick? As some have suggested I have checked the advanced section of the game controllers menu. I only have 1 thing plugged into my USB ports - joystick.

yeah so, the issue was totally that it was detecting my rudder pedals as default instead of my HOTAS. Got it fixed. Just unplugged the pedals and all was good.
Ok, dumb question here:

Does this game require a joystick to play? It does not start up for me, the fist thing that comes up is "make sure your joystick is plugged in", then the game crashes, hard.

I am not sure what is going on here. the 1994 version works just fine with a keyboard, but the 98 version, the one i want to play, does not even start up.

Version from 1998 indeed requires joystick to play at all. That's because it was re-made on X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter engine, and that game could be played via joystick exclusively. Same thing with X-Wing: Alliance. Games won't even start if you don't have one. That said, supposedly, if you have a gamepad, that counts as a joystick, as far as the game is concerned. I haven't tried this workaround myself, but I've read how people used xbox 360 gamepads to play the game.
