Just bought and installed TIE fighter and it says I have to have a joystick to play! I always used keyboard + mouse on the original TIE fighter, what gives? I know X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter required a joystick, but TIE never did. Is there any workaround for this, I'd rather not use a joystick.

I am trying to figure it out at the moment, it seems that the game recognizes my xbox controller as a joystick.
At least partly. I have not yet figured out how to change some of the buttons.

Also, you should be able to play the 1998 version with mouse and keyboard, the shop page confirms this, too.

The DOS version can be played with a mouse, but the Windows version (which was redone with the X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter engine) has always been a joystick only affair, even back then.

No workaround that i know of, unless you resort to external software that mimics a virtual joystick... the requirement, by the way, is also explicitly stated in the store page.

The DOS version is pretty good anyway, and with better music, so you can happily stick with that
In the '90s, PC gamers had joysticks. You would have been nuts to play a space sim without one.

I have a 360 controller and I'd LOVE to use it for this game. Please let us know if you find a way to make it fully work.

This is ENTIRELY untrue, as I beat Wing Commander 1, 2 Privateer, and Descent: Freespace with a Keyboard only. I think I only bought my first joystick when playing Psygnosis' G-Police in Uni, (Also a game I'd love to see on GOG!)

I may be nuts, but it's not because I played numerous space sims without one. ;)

I played X-Wing and Tie Fighter with Keyboard and Mouse, and I played the crap out of those games.

The Windows versions of the games require joysticks. They run on X-Wing vs Tie Fighter engine.

The DOS originals however can be played using a mouse.
That's strange because I definitely remember playing the 1998 version with a mouse and keyboard. Weird why it's not supported now.
Your only option right now if you don't own a joystick is to use a standard pc/xbox/ps controller and use a third party tool to handle button mapping.
I have a wireless Xbox controller with the wireless PC adapter dongle thingy and it works fine, plug and play.
Does the game work with a USB-joystick?
