EDIT: gerwin released two little tools that patch the TIE95.EXE / XWING95.EXE with the neccessary changes (hex-edit) at vogons.org, so the solution written below is obsolete and not needed anymore

http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=41331

this doesnt work (yet) with the exe provided in savingcontent's "reconstructed mod (gog)"

users of the "reconstructed mod" may use the exe provided in gerwin's 'oldschool midi-music fix' for now and patch it the same way (see vogons.org, read release notes for details!!).

If 3D still doesnt work for you, there's a possible solution for AMD/ATI-cards @ post no12

there's no fix for nvidia cards yet, you might try an older driver

still no luck? well, gog disabled 3D for a reason

__________

Okay, there's a lot of whining about the fact that gog has indeed disabled 3d-support for the game.

i fiddled around a bit and the result is this crazy "build yourself a game version with working 3D Acceleration"
tutorial

problem is, 3d has been disabled in gog's exe file, but there's one exe file available in TFReorchestratedDatav1.1.zip
at http://www.savingcontent.com/2014/08/09/guide-play-x-wing-tie-fighter-series-on-windows-7-windows-8-windows-8-1-with-an-xbox-xb1-playstation-ps4-controller-flight-stick/7/
thats perfectly fine. so even if you dont own the original version of the game on disks, but want 3d back so baaaaaaad, there's still hope for you.

problem: if we use that exe instead of the one by gog, the game files (music, voice, etc) arent at the place
where the new exe needs them, it needs the files on a cd in your disc drive.

Step One:

Replace exe
Download the zip-package i mentioned above, unzip it, rename the original tie95.exe in your game folder into something tie95.org and copy the new
exe into the folder.

Step Two:

Create the Game's Data CD

get the trial version of ultraiso here http://www.ezbsystems.com/ultraiso/download.htm

install it, open it up.

On the left side rename the CD (type should be "data cd/dvd) to "TIE95"

in the explorer window of ultraiso (buttom) enter your game folder, select the MUSIC, VOICE and IVFILES folders and drag and drop them into the upper window.
save it as an iso-image (File - Save as)

mount the iso (or burn it) and put it into your first available drive. well, its not totally neccessary that its in your first drive, but you can avoid an error that way...

start the game via gog's shortcut. you'll get an error regarding a missing cd if the disk is not in your first cd-drive, just ignore it (new exe wants the music cd, but this isnt neccessary, inflight music still comes from hard disk) and click cancel.

voila, if your system is not too fancy and new, activating 3D acceleration should work fine now.
it does on my good old eeepc with intel 915gm graphics running win7 32bit

Can anyone running recent AMD video drivers (later than version 13.1) try this and report back? :)

I know from my attempts to run X-Wing Alliance on Windows 7 that AMD broke compatibility with DX6/7 after version 13.1, and I'm wondering if TIE95 is affected or not.

my win8 deskop is running 14.4, doesnt work, falls back to software rendering. sorry, this works only with older machines. or lets say, machines that still support dis old directx stuff.
Thanks
Sounds cool. Only problem is taht the three folders IVfiles, music and voice are 823mb on my pc. Thats more than can fit on a CD wich is actually very, very strange. can i just put it on a DVD instead? or what is happening here?

ah thats prolly because i downloaded the new mod with better sound. will that be a problem`?

guess the new exe wont be able to activate the new sound stuff then, right? is there any nifty way to get it to do both 3d and the new (old actually) sound?

the size is because of the mod, yes. folder structure still stays the same, so the new exe will work just fine, it has the same music fixes as the one provided in the reconstructed package for gog. (its from the disk-based version of the very same mod)

dvd should work as we just need a simple data disk and not a multi mode one.
easiest way would be to just use an iso-image of course and mount it to a virtual drive. you can even install one with the ultraiso-install ("Setup ISO CD/DVD emulator (ISODrive)

This is what it should be for 3D hardware mode to work normally, like on the original X-Wing collectos series CD release:
TIE95.exe - Offset 099ED0, Value: 00 6A 00 E8
XWING95.exe - Offset 0AC0A0, Value: 00 6A 00 E8

you mean AC0A0 o_O

you sir, know what you're talking about, this works!

who are you, some kind of double agent spying on gog?? :-D

you should create your own thread(s) about this, in xwing and tiefighter forum.

so much better than my workaround
Would be possible to make a patcher utility to restore the functions of 3d accel for those less inclined?
Does the afforementioned fix also work in Windows 8 (at a proper framerate?)

well, this "inclined" guy has no idea how to do that stuff.

its not that hard, you just have to download a hex-editor (i used "hex editor mx)", open the game-exe in it, search for the adress-offset (have a look at the left side of the editor), replace the value with the one provided above and save the file.

SOLUTION FOR ATI CARDS
======================

Thanks to Cyphox and vashren from XWA forum, I got 3D Acceleration working on my ATI R9 270 card :D

I will mention from the start that hex editing the exe file didn't work for me as the game crashed while loading a mission.
So I created an ISO file as Cyphox described.

As already mentioned by shanafin a few post above, driver compatibility was broken when Catalyst 13.11 was released. So the solution provided by vashren was to extract the old dll files from Catalyst 13.1 (when 3D was working) and copy them in the TIE installation folder, therefore bypassing the dll files from Windows folder.
He made an excellent guide: http://www.xwaupgrade.com/phpBB3008/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=11187

Although the fix was for X-Wing Alliance, it works with Tie Fighter 95. All these games are basically based on similar engines.

He suggested that a similar approach should be done for NVIDIA. I am sure that here on GOG, the community will find the solution.

For those who want the quick method, I have uploaded the dll files in an archive on WeTransfer: http://we.tl/7Xy13RTyH4

See attached screenshots with 3D support!

L.E: For the record, I am using Catalyst 14.6

What about darksaber's method described below in the thread you mentioned with the updated directdraw.dll?
Supposedly it makes it work with new catalyst drivers.

The benefit being that the modified drectdraw could be added as part of a patch.

That ddraw.dll is specifically made for X-Wing Alliance and doesn't work with the older engine.

Windows 8 has issues with the 3D Hardware mode even with it re-enabled due to its D3D emulation. I've got it running but all models (ships, etc) are invisible so it isn't really playable. The only option is to wait for a wrapper for it.

I tried it, but both X-Wing and TIE crash when starting. I think it was designed specifically for the executable of X-Wing Alliance.
The ATI DLL fix is independent of exe file. It just forces Windows to load those files for 3D rendering instead of the newer files from Windows/System32
