Are there any out there? X-wing Alliance has a ton of them and some really nicely done ones, too. Surely someone can mod these graphics to get some improvement? At least the dash board? Please tell me there are some mods out there...

not sure, but i think we can rest assured that xwing alliance will eventually be released.
Hmmmmm.......so.....should I just wait for X-wing Alliance to come out? Is there any difference? I've always heard that the storylines for Tie Fighter were exceptional and well worth playing. Is that the case? On one hand, it's nice to have better graphics. On the other, some games are worth it to have slighly worse graphics for an overall better game experience. Is that the case here?

Is there any chance that someone might do a mod for this game?
There is a mod that ports most of TIE-Fighter over to X-Wing Alliance. Check these sites:

http://www.maxgames.it/xwc/ (read the section "Tie Fighter Conversion")

Don't know about any graphical mods or enhancements for the original games though. Only X-Wing Alliance has tons of downloadable craft available:

So, your advice is to wait for X-wing Alliance?

Is it multi player?

If you want better graphics, then you'll have to wait on X-Wing Alliance. If you want to enjoy a near perfect game, then go for GOG's release of Star Wars: Tie Fighter (floppy disk edition)-- even without the bells and whistles of the voiced mission briefings, this game is fantastic! The problem with XW:A is that even with all of those mods to get the Tie Fighter game "ported" to it, you're essentially getting a bunch of single player missions cobbled together. I tried it out awhile back, and I don't think you get a functioning campaign with a story, just the missions. Tie Fighter has an awesome campaign that lets you experience Star Wars from the "other side".

Personally, I'd recommend playing Tie Fighter, and worry about a modded XW:A later if it ever gets released. If you have a complete aversion to older 3D graphics, then worry about modding.

Edit: Oh, and XW:Alliance is multiplayer and single player.

You think it's worthy enough that someone somehwere will want to update it? I'm not even talking about fantastic and state of the art. We need some graphic student that wants to have a cool project for school to update this.
I tried the TIE Fighter Total Conversion while it still had just five battles. It was great from a technical perspective, but as said above it misses a lot of the TIE Fighter feeling and atmosphere. Besides, the improved X-Wing Alliance game engine is not designed for TIE Fighter and that presents some problems in the missions - for example, destroying capital ships with torpedoes becomes nearly impossible because of the big ships' ability to shoot down incoming missiles.

I would advice just playing TIE Fighter right now. Test the 1994 version and if it seems too crude and old try out the 1998 version with the sound/music mods mentioned in the other threads here. I myself prefer the newer version with mod that restores original TIE Fighter soundtrack (even without iMuse).
I might try that. I'll just asking as many questions as possible before buying a joystick and then this.

thanks guys.

If anyone out there with free time and a good heart...and graphic skills wants to tackle this....go for it!
If graphics from the floppy version are too poor for you I would recommend the 98 version. Even though the change of music is a little crime, the graphism and added voices are still a major improvement.

XWA is a great game but tie fighter is for me the best of all time.
That's what I hear.

What I would love to see is Tie Fighter with even better graphics than the 98 version. That would make me happy.

At this point, I'm planning on getting a Joystick and then this game. I'll play the 98 version and do the music mod.

I'll also hope against hope that Disney will remake a version of XvT in a modern way and even put it on Xbox One.
They need to make new xwing games. with out screwing it up
Do not wait for X-Wing Alliance. Alliance is great and you should absolutely get it but Tie fighter is also a must for any Star Wars or space combat fan.
My advice is to play TIE Fighter. 1998 version with 3D acceleration has decent graphics. Alliance is a good space sim but just doesn't have the atmosphere of Tie Fighter, and porting T/F missions into XWA isn't the same like playing the original game.
