I'm trying to use Controller Companion to bind keyboard keys to my xbox controller, in order to get the xbox trigger keys working to fire weapons. Has anyone been able to re-bind xbox controller keys? I've tried to use Controller Companion but am having limited success.
Hi use joytokey, just assign a keyboard key to the trigger and right joysticks.

I don't believe using joytokey works (as supposed to). I'm using Xpadder and it's not working as supposed to. Reasons:

- Game doesn't detect the Z-axis, so assigning keyboard keys to the triggers do not work.
- In "out-of-a-ship" missions (where you play as Dash Rendar), you can switch between 1st and 3rd person mode. But the controller can't emulate 1st person shooters. Because the horizontal axis on the left thumbstick will ALWAYS be used to turning (not strafing).

I mean, on DOS games you can always set "joysticktype=none" and emulate everything on Xpadder. With Windows games (the case with this one), this becomes a problem. I remember there were some games that you could "cheat" into unplugging the gamepad, starting the game, and plugging the gamepad after the game was loaded... Sorry, don't remember which game was that. X-Wing Alliance, this doesn't work (game does not start until a joystick/gamepad is connected). To make matters worse, you simply can't assign firing to trigger buttons, and the game will always see them as axis... In this case, SOTE doesn't even detect it.

A total bummer. And it's not GOG's fault... I really have no idea of how to get around this issues with classic games that ran on old Windows software :(
For the Z axis it work since I'm doing it. You can't press both trigger simultaneously however.
What joytokey do is it detect himselft the trigger, when its pressed joytokey will press a keyboard key of your choice.

but yeah you can't play like a modern shooter, at best you can mimic golden eye style with strafing on right joystick, but can't have the Y axis for looking up and down since its bind to main joystick when using the aim button.

Well, glad that at least the triggers work for you... it's better than nothing. What I don't get it, is how Xpadder doesn't work. Kinda sucks. I wish there was another way (easier too) to make all these fully customizable for these classic windows games.

XInput Plus allows you to remap all of the buttons and axes, including splitting the triggers into separate axes, applying deadzones to the thumbsticks, etc., to get XInput controllers (like the 360 controller) working well with old DirectInput games. I wouldn't say it is easier to use, though, as it takes some time getting used to it to understand how to set it up, but it definitely gives more control over the customization..

EDIT: You can even swap the axes of the thumbsticks over, should you wish, or alter them in other ways. For instance in X-Wing Alliance, the right thumbstick controls the rolling of the ship, but due to the differences between XInput and DirectInput, to roll the craft you used the right thumstick up and down, which was awkward. With XInput Plus I was able to swap the two axes on the right thumbstick so that in game I could use right thumbstick left and right to roll the ship, as that is much more intuitive.

That one seems promising!! I'll try it out and give feedback later... Thanks!!

EDIT: Awesome!! Combining XInput Plus with X-padder, you can play the "1st/3rd" person stages in Shadows of the Empire just like a 1st person shooter. It's takes a little while to get it working right (deactivating axis to work as strafe buttons, etc.), but in the end it all works... Thanks a LOT korell!

Glad it worked well for you. :)

I think XInput Plus is a great piece of software, and it is the only one I know that can split the triggers into separate axes (which is a must for those old DirectInput racing games). I found out about it from the PCGamingWiki, but it still doesn't seem to be a very well known piece of software, which I can only put down to how the website and screenshots are not in english, but it does have english letters on an english OS.

Yeah, it's Japanese... I googled a guide on how to change the language, but in the end had no use for it. Opened the program for the 1st time, and it was already in English. Will probably re-install X-Wing Alliance just to try out the triggers as fire buttons (played through the whole game using the shoulder buttons for firing :( ) Anyways, thanks again mate.

Have you tried using Xinput Plus? It's a program that allows certain d-input games (such as MDK 2 and SW Republic Commando) use the triggers as independent buttons. You can find more details here. I hope that works out for you.

EDIT: Ninja'd by the posters above me.
