Hello,

Can anyone out there help me with mapping a Retro Link N64 USB controller as the joystick for this game? I am running Windows 8.1 64-bit, and I would rather not run the game in compatibility mode if I can help it. Is there either a way to manually configure the controller within the game, or is there a driver of some sort that I can use that will act as an intermediary between SWRS and the N64 controller? Thanks.

UPDATE:

I figured out how to do this. I had to run the game in compatibility mode for Windows 98, then I was able to configure the controller within the game under settings. I downloaded a .pdf of the original N64 manual in order to have a diagram of what the original button configuration was; otherwise, I would have been stuck with the default configuration which was weird. I hope this helps someone.

I have went through every single compatibility setting and I still cant get "Button 1" to stop auto-mapping to everything. I have tried switching to every OS then defaulting the controls then disabling everything in the compatibility tab and trying again. (there is no direct "Disable compatibility mode" as everyone has been saying, only the option to uncheck every box).

I have also tried "change settings for all users" and still nothing works. I got an N64 to USB adapter just to play this game and I must admit this is infuriating. If I can't get this to work I'd like to get my money back for this game if at all possible.

Attached is how the settings look to "disable compatibility" as most people have worded it, but I have no idea if this is even correct. When I installed the game the box looked exactly like that anyways.

Is anyone having issues with getting the controls to stick?

Basically, I switch to 98 compatibility, configure the joystick (and test a mission, so it works), flip it back to XP SP2 and then the joystick proceeds to not work. The buttons are all correct under the settings, but the game doesn't read the input.

im having the same issue. I would just leave it in compatibility mode for '98, but that slow menu messes with me

I am having this problem as well.

If you're having trouble getting the joystick to work in game after changing the bindings then disable all compatibility settings by unchecking the box. The joystick should work properly again after that. If the game freezes when you start it and all you see is a black screen then try unplugging your controller and plugging it back in.

For some reason the joystick wants to turn itself off when using the default Windows XP compatibility settings.

No matter what I do, my joystick settings are always blank, unless I attempt to map a key, and then it's always button 1. Any suggestions? Is the game supposed to acknowledge my joystick or am I missing something? I could at least play the game if the Joystick had any settings whatsoever. The mouse and keyboard controls are crap.

Update: Nvm, I'll write off the $10. I wanted to play this for nostalgia reasons, since I had no trouble getting a joystick to work at the time it was actually released.

Count me in on compatibility options not helping anything.

I'm having the same issue. Nobody is complaining about the Steam version so maybe I'll try that instead.

Heyuh...this is what helped for me:

I am running Windows 10 Pro x64 on an AMD Ryzen 1700X with 32GB RAM and a GeForce 1080!

1.) Go into the install folder and change the options of the Rogue Squadron .exe (NOT ROGUE.exe) to run as admin!
2.) DETACH ANY OTHER GAMEPAD, JOYSTICK OR SIMILAR! The game doesn't like that!
3.) Run the Launcher (Either through GoG or the Rogue.exe) and change the Joystick to your desired one.
It CAN be, that it is deselected!
4.) Start the game THROUGH THE ROGUE SQUADRON.EXE AND NOT GOG OR ROGUE.EXE. It will somehow mess everything up and the Joystick isn't found!
5.)Go under the joystick options. There click the "DEFAULT" button (as already purposed!).
6.) Try moving the stick, it should work now!

IF NOT this helped with a friend (On top of the other things, except 4!!!)
He downloaded a save profile from a cheat website (Don't judge him ^^). Put it in your "Player Profiles" Folder.
It should come with everything so far configured.

Yes, that means, that you are stuck with the default/save control-set, but better, than nothing!

Just resolved this issue for anyone else who gets stuck like I did.
I first had to run the game in compatibility for win95, go into the settings and select default which would map all the controls. Then I had to exit and remove the compatibility settings for all to work.

OK, but what about those of us who are locked out of the ability to change the compatibility mode to 95? Like, I'm locked out of it. I don't think I was before, but I am now. What the heck happened???
EDIT: Never mind, I was able to change it to run as all users. Whoops.

Just adding what worked for me. Win 10 64-bit.

Side note, for changing compatibility mode, if you let the installer create a Desktop shortcut, you can just right-click on the Desktop shortcut and select Properties to change compatibility mode, instead of having to browse to and change properties on the .exe itself.

And as others have pointed out, you must click "Change settings for all users" at the bottom of the Compatibility tab in order to be able to change the Compatibility mode.

Make sure you go into the Launcher, Hardware Configuration, Joystick Options, and select your joystick. (Then Accept, and Done.)

QUICK NOTE: Before trying all of this myself to get the joystick working, I had been playing the game (badly) with the mouse for a while, and I had already copied in the dgVoodoo .dll files for better graphics. Windows 98 compatibility mode did NOT like this at all. It hung up the game and I had to restart my computer. So if you've already put the dgVoodoo files in place, remove them while you run in Windows 98 compatibility mode, then you can copy the dgVoodoo files back in after you remove compatibility mode.

It was set to run in Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode by default. Simply UNchecking Compatibility mode did NOT allow the Defaults option in the game to set the Joystick controls. As at least some others have said, I had to set it to Windows 98/Me mode before the Defaults button in the game would work.

But then yes, launch the game in Win 98 compatibility mode, put up with the slow menus, go into the Joystick settings, click the Default button, and it should assign the default joystick controls. Play a mission, then you can exit the game and it should save the settings.

After that, THEN I was able to completely UNcheck Compatibility mode and run the game without any compatibility mode and the joystick still worked.
