Protagonist187: HOW TO FIX THIS ISSUE!
If you're having issues with defining the joysticks buttons (just giving you 1 button) just click on the default button whilst on the joystick option panel, it's on the options on the right hand side. It will define all the controls for you and will work in game.
the controller should work fine.
Thanks! Worked perfectly for me. I had to make sure to enable the setting for all users in order to be able to deselect compatibility mode, you're a game saver! If you're having issues with defining the joysticks buttons (just giving you 1 button) just click on the default button whilst on the joystick option panel, it's on the options on the right hand side. Still not working for me, tried all the things listed above. Compatibility mode option is grayed out and cannot be changed. Default button does not work either.

The tip to change the compatibility mode on Windows 98 was perfect, now I could configure the Joystick. The menü works instead very slowly, but when you change the mode on Windows 8 back, the buttons are also configured and the menu works normal. Thank's a lot.

With me after a couple of goes, I just press default. It works fine with the logitech gamepad F310. I did not use compatibility mode. I have W7 Pro 64bit. Just make sure that switch at the back is on 'd' and the mode is off

darksear: If you change compatibility mode to windows 98 the default button should work. Be sure to start a game and then quit otherwise it won't stay populated.
If you switch compatibility to windows 98 the menus act really slowly. Remove all the compatibility functions. the menus will work fine and it will save the joystick mapping.

Does an installation of DirectX9.0 help affected users on Win7 and Win8 (and Vista for that matter)? Could it be due to missing DirectInput libraries as the 360 controller is XInput and unable to find an appropriate DirectInput driver for old non-Xinput games?
For me, it picked it up immediately, though I'm also passing my 360 controller through vJoy, a virtual joystick. But I installed DirectX9.0 as one of the very first steps after installing the OS as it is known to resolve a number of issues with older games.

You go to the folder where the game is installed
Look for the "Rogue" sub folder
right click on rogué squadron .exe
Finally fo to the compatibility tab

EDIT: Oh, and the compatibility settings were grayed out, which was confusing, until I figured out you have to click "Change compatibility settings for all users" <- if this has been set, you can only change it by clicking this and then setting it.

jr2: Right-o, I just had to set compatibility to '98, set joystick mappings to default, start a game, quit, remove all compatibility settings, and then re-start and everything works excellent now. Remove all the compatibility functions. the menus will work fine and it will save the joystick mapping.
