Have you:

1. installed in a directory other than Program Files (x86)?
2. run the game as administrator?
3. set the display mode in dxcfg.exe to Set by application?
4. installed DirectX 9.0c manually?
I ran the dxdiag utility and now the game seems to be running!
Hey

I have downloaded and updated Direct X off the Microsoft website and it still doesn't work. I'm not sure what else to try.

Did you run the DX application in the additional executables in gog?
Hi all

Thank you for the fix. I have attached screenshots should anyone have the same issue and need a guide :)

Now, hows about those of us who have done all these things and still get this error message every time? lol

I bought this game at retail back in the day and I recall it being particularly fiddly to get working with unhandled exceptions and DX versions. I'm guessing despite their efforts, it hasn't made it any better on that front.

I actually never had those problems on retail. Never had to go back into DX to try and make that work, and I don't recall seeing unhandled exception errors until I started trying to run the game on newer hardware.
OK. I seem to have got it working by setting it to windowed mode, but at the display mode of my monitor. See attached.

Aaaand that fixed it for me as well. Cheers man!
Glad some of these fixes helped you :)

Happy Star Trek Day!
Unfortunately, I can't seem to solve it. I start the game and hear the cutscenes but I don't see anything. And after the last cutscene, it crashes with the following:

---------------------------
D3D8 Application
---------------------------
Could not find any compatible Direct3D
devices.

I have a multi-monitor setup, so maybe that's an issue. I can't see any option to change which device to output to. Also strange is that my "Display mode" option in the DirectX wrapper only gives me "Same as desktop" or "Set by application" but I've seen screenshots where people select a resolution.

I've installed DirectX9 and verified the installation again but no luck.

I had the same issue as most, the game would launch in the background and I could hear audio but nothing would appear. I would get the "No Direct 3D Device" error, along with "Fatal Exception" errors as well. After working with support most of the day, updating drivers and trying varying degrees of compatibility mode, I found one thing through Reddit that actually worked for me.

In the install folder of the game, there should be a file called dbghelp.dll.

All I had to do was rename it to dbghelp_old.dll and it frickin worked! I was able to load up the game, full screen, no problem at all. I didn't have to mess with any other DirectX versions, this was on a clean install direct from GOG, no additional patches and it wasn't run or installed in compatibility mode.

I haven't tried playing anything yet, but I can see the menu, and the UI and so.. fingers crossed.

*Edit*

I found the "fix" on a Reddit page for the game "Rise of Nations". Different game but it dealt with the exact same issue, almost verbatim, that I was having. Credit goes to the user "Helios210", who posted how to rename that file.

You absolute legend! Renaming that file also gave me the resolution options I was missing in the DirectX wrapper. I'm in and testing it with OBS. Cheers!
