This might be premature but I finally got through two skirmish missions where I did not crash, then I attempted a mission. I ended the mission after 12 minutes because I have no idea what I am doing, but it did not crash on me.

Previously, I would crash within 1 to 2 minutes of starting a skirmish mission. I was able to use hardware rendering at 1280x1024 even.

What appears to have fixed things is changing the mouse section to the following values in the sfc.ini file. I suspect the async might be enough. As I said, this is might be premature, but I no longer see random flickering and such things now.

[Mouse]
async=0
hwblit=1
This is excellent.

No window mode or software rendering required, you deserve a medal.
Will give it a try!

Update:
This seems to be working, Got the best res (the game will allow) full screen and not crashing on me! Thankyou!

Just for the record, people at Dynaverse.net report that this works not only for SFC1, but also SFC2: Empires at War and SFC: Orion Pirates. The hwblit=1 line is not required, as you assumed.
If this is a confirmed fix, then maybe GOG support need to be given the information via their support contacts so that they can then make the amendment within the ini file that the game installer creates. That way there would be a new fixed installer for download from the site.
This works for me so far.

My game was crashing about 5 seconds after launching the skirmish battle. Just played completely through.

Running Win10..

I also tried admin mode and didn't work.
I ran in compatibility mode as XP and didn't work.

This one is working well.
It works like a charme, thanks a bunch :)
This did it for me!

Oh you lovely lovely person! Ya deserve a medal!

-- EDIT

Tested last night after posting that and I can also confirm that async=0 allows the game work to perfectly in 3D 1280x1024 without crashing. Has it been submitted to GOG as a fix?

I know that this is an old thread but the fix did not work for me.

Still crashes after the op video.
I also tried the dgVodoo2 DX emulation depending but i did just got it to crash in a marginally different pattern.

Run the game from Starfleet.exe instead of SFC.exe.

What does the error message (if any) say?

With my gpu as output just a crash to desktop.
With dgVodoo2 DX mode just an endless Loading.
Worked for me, as well, Windows 8.1 — was crashing about a minute into the first tutorial mission, also any keypresses only yielded a Windows-style error ping. Somehow the mouse settings fixed everything.

Congrats. @qwixter, you're the MVP of this game!
