Good morning,

I have a geforce 1070 and an i7 6600 and the game still runs very poorly. In tight corridors it's no problem but on the vast multiplayer maps the framerate goes down from a stable 60 to 30 when I look in the wrong direction. I've changed every graphics setting it makes no difference. I used compatibility mode, made no difference. I even renamed the exe to quake3.exe. No difference Anyone got the same problem? Game isn't playable with massive framedrops like that. It only happens on large areas when I look in the distance. When I face a wall the fps go to 60 again. It definitely can't be my hardware it's gotta have something to do with the game

EDIT: Seems like Vertex Lighting was the culprit. After I enabled the low quality lighting (which also greyed out the high res texture option) the framerate is stable. However, from what I've read this is an option for old graphic cards that couldn't handle the game and I don't have the high quality textures now. My GPU should handle the game without any problems, yet it behaves as if I was playing on a PC that doesn't even meet the system requirements, wtf.

Some Video Settings, Drivers and Software can cause issues.
Often created by a certain kind of software.
Using some sort of overlay like starting the game from steam or other
software that does similar stuff can create issues like that.

If you are using the GOG Galaxy Client you will need to
adjust it to use the renamed executable:

Setting quake3.exe as default executable via GOG Galaxy Client:
1. Click on Installed Games and select the Game
2. Click: Settings Button at the very top right next to the PLAY button
3. Select: Show folder, a new Window should open
4. Make a copy of the EF2 executable, rename this executable to quake3
5. Remember the path of the folder and keep it in the background

6. Repeat Step 1,2 and 3 then select: Manage Installation
7. Select: Configure...
8. A new Dialog should have opened now, scroll down
9. Click or Activate: Custom executables / Arguments and scroll down if you have to
10. A new Section should appear, named File 1
11. Click in the new Section the word: Duplicate

12. Another new Section should now be visible looking similar to File 1
13. In the new Section select the first Textfiled containing the executable path
14. Two file options should appear now, select: Select executable
15. A File selection Dialog should now show up
16. Browse to where the game is installed and select the quake3 executable
17. Back in the Settings Dialog, make sure to make quake3 the Default executable
18. Click: The OK button and start the game

For the offline Version follow this guide to rename the EF2.exe to quake3.exe:

I renamed the executable to quake3.exe and launched it directly from the game folder. It made no difference for me.

Interesting, if you like we can chat and see what this is causing this issue, later today, if you add me to your fiend list in gog. I am very confident what ever it is can be resolved.

Actually it helped me. I just wonder why does it help to just rename the executable into Quake3.exe? lol

Because it is a driver issue. (Yes I am pointing at you NVIDIA, INTEL and very very very especially at you AMD)

This game is using a older version of OpenGL, I think it was about version 4 (4.3 ?) where something in OpenGL changed, long after the game was relased and drivers use the newer version by default.
Which makes some part of the Rendering of the level different causing the games that are affected (there are quite a few also with very similar issues but different engines) to render on the client the entire level in the direction the player is looking, even if there are solid walls and VIS and Hint obstructions that are ment to prevent exactly this.

This game is based on the same engine (id-tech 3) of a older game named Quake 3 which uses the executable name quake3. The Drivers recognize that game executable name and know how to handle the game then, this is why it works by renaming.

There is a much more elaborate way to edit some settings of the driver (some have a ui some need editing of ini and other files) so in theory this could be done differently, it is just that renaming it to quake3 is so much easier.

Being a modified version of Q3 Team Arena the command tweaks for similar games should work

-r_primitives 2 could work to make the game smoother in some configurations
-r_swapinterval 1 or 0 sets the game vsync on or off if the option does not work from ingame setings directly
-maxfps should be set to the max refresh rate of your monitor. Common examples are 60 or 120 .

Any tweak/command line available in Quake 3 should work in Elite Force 1/2

Most of them, yes, but certainly not all, it is a common misconception it would support all the commands.
STEF2 uses the Officially most Advanced id-Tech 3 Engine with Ritual Entertainments Übertools which heavily modifies some parts of the engine and gamecode.

-maxfps should be set to the max refresh rate of your monitor. Common examples are 60 or 120 .
This will not work with STEF2, it uses instead:
seta com_maxfps 120

Also for fov STEF2 uses instead:
seta userfov 96

I tried this too and I've had no luck running the game. When I launch it, I hear music start to play for about half a second and then it stops and I'm left with a black screen and only the mouse cursor. I'm using an HP laptop and I'm pretty sure Intel graphics.
