The legendary total conversion mod for Armada 2 is still available even though its development has effectively stopped. In its vastly updated codebase you can play the original version of Armada 2 as a mod, but note that the Borg technology assimilator does not work properly.

I looked into that, it's just not "Armada."
It's probably a fine RTS on its own, but it's changed the game far too much for it to be considered "Armada" IMO.
Nothing is the same, not even the UI.

I guess that's the point of "Total conversions" though. Those have never been something I've liked.

I wish there was another way of getting A2 to work on Windows 10 though without it. Neither dxwrapper nor dgvoodo2 worked for me.
If I'm remembering my history properly, Fleet Ops began life as the Armada III TCM. It's a shame we never got a third game in this series and the RTS genre is more or less in cryostasis these days so no real hope of it happening now. Officially, at least. Fleet Ops is the closest you'll get to Armada III.

FleetOps originally started as an Armada 1 mod, actually. Armada 3 is a mod for Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion that came waaaaaaaaaaaaaay later.

What happened to the Armada III TCM mod for Armada II? I can't find anything about it now, but I remember following it closely 10-15 years ago. The last time I read about it, it was in a playable beta and I almost downloaded it, but I didn't want to dig my Armada II discs out of storage at the time to try it. So I know it wasn't just vaporware. It did exist at some point.

You need to select the option to its right, "Existing Installation" instead of "Scan Optical Drives".

For good measure, apply the unofficial 1.2.5 patch first. http://armadafiles.com/files/armada-2/mods/patches/star-trek-armada-ii-patch-project-zip-125/details
Does the unofficial latch have any effect on FleetOps?
I can't install the 1.2.5 patch, it keeps saying make sure you have 1.1

This, same here.

Instead of the installer version, you need to use the ZIP version: http://armadafiles.com/files/armada-2/mods/patches/star-trek-armada-ii-patch-project-zip-125/details
Fleet ops mods normally require you to point to the armada2.exe for authorization, if you are not using cd version, but gog version. Fleet Ops vanilla still requires a CD though. Only FleetOps roots a submod does not a require a cd, but still the legal armada2.exe for fleetOps mod authorization.

FleetOps Roots sub-mod: (requires FleetOps 3.2.7 and armada2, but no 1.2.5 patch)

Focusing on fewer but mainly canon ships with a rock-paper-scissor approach.

Just did.

Here what works and what not, and how to do it.

Armada 2 vanilla works for me if I use gog installer (no manual installer). Windows 10 professional.
No matter if it works for you or not:

You can download and install in any directory:
https://www.fleetops.net/download
by authorizing it by selecting armada 2 folder from gog.
Yet this mod requires still a CD. 1 for up to 4 player, like the original. There is currently no way to play FleetOps vanilla without CD. You like to play without CD, even with the gog version?

Install this afterwards:
FleetOps Roots 1.1
Into any directory
Then copy the FleetOps Roots PATACH 1.1

To unzip stuff, you may use the free 7-zip program.

Then you can at least play the FleetOps sub-mod roots, without CD even with gog version. Same engine, same stability. Stable (unless on specific maps). Online playable e.g. with Hamatchi. Start the FleetOps.exe from the Fleet Ops Roots folder you installed it.
Your welcome :)

Yes, just go to a site that gets blocked by 4 different security systems including bitdefender and firefox for site security issues. Mhm.

I happen to use Firefox and access it just fine. The site is run by FleetOps devs and is an archive of old Armada2Files stuff.

But ya, shitware like Bitdefender is trustworthy (:
