I'm new to following GOG releases.
I know for DOS games they use DOSBox to get them running on newer systems.

However, for Windows games, how do they typically "fix" them? Does GOG get access to the source code?

Will we ever know?

Depending on the case, they may use dgVoodoo, nGlide (Armada currently not in its database), or their own DirectX wrapper. They don't strictly need source code access for doing that.
If I were to guess, this one will probably use their DirectX wrapper. I know one of the main reasons this game doesn't work with windows 10 natively is because of changes to directdraw. One of the best fixes out there for it also involves a ddraw update.
I really hope they have the source code and do a proper update not just "make it work" sorta release as in like the other trek games which still needed tweaking to get right.

If using the source code they could fix actual bugs and memory leaks and engine issues of these old trek games.

If all they are, are games with custom installers, a few fan patches applied or dosbox or wrapper configs then chucked out the door i would question why buy, just use ur old copies and do the fixing ourselves.
its probably going to be via their directx wrapper
It will take more than the DX-Wrapper. The LAN LOBBY or TCP/IP Launching screen is damaged, and you can only multiplayer with GameRanger, the TCP Network doesn't work so im curious how GR managed to VPN it properly....

Ive played the game in single mode using 1.3.0 and a 3070GTX. But it bombs to desktop alot and aload of the original setup screen/windows are all wrong.

I've tried many DX Wrappers and when the game starts it runs OK, usually its the pre-start that fails.

Im hoping that GR got their hands on the original code (cant be that bad for 700mb game).

*crosses fingers*
Had the same problems.
Playing the game with DXWnd (DirectXWindower) helped,
after setting the DXMode from auto to DX8 or something like that.
The main menu was still broken, but the game itself worked completely fine.
GOG hardly, if ever, gets access to actual source code for their classic game releases and this is a 20 year old game from a studio that has been basically defunct for over a decade (absorbed into Rockstar back in 2008-ish); it's pretty unlikely that the source code even exists anymore. I suppose it is possible that some former MadDoc employee with a hoarding problem is still holding onto an old hard drive from back then with the source code on it and GOG managed to track it down, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Whatever work they do will get the game working for the vast majority of people out there, even if you might have to tweak a few settings on your own to get it running just right (the nature of PC gaming). Frankly nearly all the issues this game has with modern systems have to do with DirectX's old functionality, so the DX wrapper is likely to solve it all right out of the box (except multiplayer, whole 'nother story there).
