Is there a way to increase a ship's lifespan once its shields are down?

I notice in the odf files, there appears to be a % chance of hitting the hull for each ship. But how many hits can it take to hits hull before it explodes? Or do hits to its hull have some other effect?

Look at what a given ship/station inherits.

For example, a Klingon Negh'var (kbattle.odf) inherits a regular battleship's ODF file (battle.odf) that should answer your question.
I don't see anything that seems to control how quickly a ship goes BOOM after its shields drop. There's no generic hitpoints attribute that I can see.
